Speedo compatibility on 1997 monster

I'll start by saying that speedos/clocks are not my strong suit, I am hesitant about playing around with mine but the one I currently have fitted is one I loath.

I bought the bike last year with a non-standard digital dial on it, a small little thing that is hard to see at night/when going at speed. It isn't backlit which makes it impossible to use at times.

Since I ride an older monster I am unsure of the compatibility of more modern clocks, those off the more recent monsters/anything that is more useable.  I've tried finding an original '97 set but seeing as it was over 13 years ago they aren't easy to come by.

Does anyone know if the more modern dials/speedos compatible with the older bikes? This may sound like a rather stupid question but I really don't have a clue
:-\

thanks.

The original was a mechanical drive off the front wheel.   On the left side of the wheel should be the drive mechanism, or a spacer if it's been removed.  In '02 ( I think ) they went to electronic so anything prior to that should work. There are lots of options for aftermarket electronic dashes that work.

This would work:

Your stock was probably like this, without all the other stuff;

If you don't go with something "stock" then if you pull out your speedometer there should be a sticker on the back that tells you what gearing ratio you have. Being a '97, the sticker may be really faded and brittle. Try not to destroy it or lose it until you write down the ratio. I don't remember it off the top of my head. You can then replace it with just about anything that has the same ratio. Matching the diameter of the original unit may be difficult, though, and you might have to fab up some kind of adapter.

The stock speedo was a standard 80mm gauge.

When I was looking a while ago I was only finding stuff in like 4", 3.5", or 2" diameter. I guess I wasn't looking in the right spot.  :(

I put a SPA 80mm unit right in the stock cluster on mine.

Maybe you have to spend obscene amounts of money to get 3".  [laugh]

problem is I dont have the stock clocks anymore and all I've got left is the current non-standard piece that has nothing on it about gearing etc (I've spent the winter stripping it all down to repair/clean it). I'll have a trawl through the paperwork later to see if it lists it there.

Just finding a set of clocks that matches the bike's theme will be something short of a miracle.

Does your bike still have the drive on the front wheel?

A Stock 97 monster had a speedo with no tach.

Some 900's had tachometers, and DP offered kits.

What is the theme of the bike?

I know where there is one like this...

it requires the front drive and cable.

Its got quite a lot of "shiny" parts around the handlebars/forks and a black plastic speedo/clocks would stick out like a sore thumb. I'm searching for a chrome-style clock to be honest. And from what I've seen it wouldve only originally had the one dial set, so no tach on it.

Did you look at the pic of the bike I posted

Is your current one mechanical?  You said it had a digital readout so I assumed it was electronic...

My apologies, I dont think I was terribly certain myself at the time of posting. To confirm it is an electronic clock. It still retains the mechanical attachments on the bike but has been converted by the looks of it.

erkishhorde

Picture of the unit on the bike? Sounds like an analogue unit with a digital read out. What does it show other than speed that you want to maintain? You keep saying clock, so I'm assuming it shows more than just speed.
