Well, if those are home made turbine engines (which fits with redneck ;D ) then they used turbochargers as the base.  As there's nothing to start the turbo's turbine wheel spinning (where the fun happens) it's common to use a leaf blower or compressed air to get the process started.

The leafblower is used for engine start.
These are a similar but simpler construction than the German WW2 pulse jet.
I remember something from "scrap heap challenge" where they built one to power a vehicle.
