If they bring this in,that's the last straw,I'm moving to the country !
 http://smh.drive.com.au/drive-life/call-to-cut-city-speed-limits-to-40kmh-20120101-1ph98.html
They are claiming that 30kph in city areas is 'international best practice', really ? Where ?

Alright! Time for me to be possibly unpopular!

I don't think they're looking to apply this throughout the whole of the suburbs of Sydney, it looks limited to Syd City Council... the same council that allows me to park my motorcycle for free and is forcing us to become a one car (but two bike) family.

As a city resident I wouldn't be completely against a 40km/h speed limit in the cbd.. in fact I'd like to see far less traffic through the city in general... now if only we had the infrastructure to allow that to happen, lets say something like bicycle lanes and a functional, cost effective light rail solution... hrm.. now that'd get the 2GB set talking.

As for which countries have a 30kph limit through residential areas, it's most of Europe. >>Clickity<<.. It's just a matter of how you define a "residential area" and a basic realisation that EU's mesh of interconnected cities and townships is nothing like Australia's galaxy sized Metropolitan areas... Most of the areas classified as "residential" through EU are barely big enough for two cars side by side, hence the logical limits.

So here are some of my top things to make Sydney(city) a more efficient place to be.
  • Increase the capacity of all major roads heading AWAY from the CBD.. e.g... any M5 expansion should be kept to two lanes coming in to the CBD, but four lines heading out.
  • Establish a ban on trucks/vans/etc on metropolitan roads (including motorways and F3/F6) during peak commuter travel times  0600-1000 and 1500-1900
  • Get the M4 East link finally built so it doesn't dump people at concord/homebush
  • Increase the number of connected bicycle lanes in the cbd and convert George St into a pedestrian mall with light rail access
  • RTA/RMS to implement a tiered registration expense system based on GVM and Fuel efficiency figures and direct any increased revenue directly in to subsidised rail and other mass transport systems.

Ending rant here and hoping to be more popular again soon.

Trouble is they don't mention "CBD", they talk about "across the city". If it was just CBD in peak hours, probably no big deal, but could you imagine riding the length of Broadway out to say, Norton Street on Sunday afternoon or 11pm any night at 40kph ?
Pretty much agree with everything else, just getting of sick of lower and lower speed limits being proposed as the solution to every traffic problem across Sydney.

C'mon Betty, a guy's gotta be able to dream that some sort of inter departmental work would be done to help resolve the issues.

You're absolutely right though, I wouldn't be holding my breath.

screw that hippies - I demand the right to ring the crap out of a v12 turbo hummer running fuel made from the blood of rare owls and kittens flat out down George street .. I vote we toll pedestrians for using footpaths. Those things take up at *least* two lanes and for what? It's just another missed revenue raising opp for the gubbernmentz.

I was polishing Kristyn's tank, and I think I might have polished through the clearcoat in a couple of spots.  Do you think she'll notice?
