So... it's "dual sport" bike time then Mendo Dave.
More options than you can poke a stick at. I went for the DR coz they're cheap, simple, relatively un-heavyish, and easy to fix when you bend things in the middle of nowhere.
Pretty much everything else has water cooling.... and that - for my needs - was a complication I could live without.
So with the shop closing.... are you dusting off the theodolite once more?
IMO Multi too posh for bush bashin' GK (cept for City Gents like your good self
).
Indeed! 👍🏻

Hey Ung!!!
Help me out here, I'd really like to get the monster rebuilt and back on the road but I've been toying with the idea of buying a DR 650, did look at an XR400, nice and light, air cooled, simple, reliable but too many drawbacks, kick start only, light subframe (not good for putting loads on) poor lights cos low output with the alternator thingy. So with me wanting to get back to what they now call 'adventure' riding (started doing this kind of thing back in the eighties on a XT500) I'm looking at the DR so Ung what do you reckon is the DR a good thing??

Mmick if you're doing what I call old bloke's dirt riding.... on dirt roads rather than...
yer actual DIRT riding.... the DR is a good bit of gear. Or at least a good start.... to a good bit of gear. The forks are rubbish as is the rear shock.... but as with everything for a DR.... there are 10,000 options for upgrading the shit bits. There's a DR improvement to suit every budget
They're sturdy. Can carry stuff. No radiator or hoses to break and leave you stranded. No canbus fancy-pants electronics which can't be "bush fixed". No fuel injection , no fuel pump. Dead bloody simple. Can cruise (perhaps calling it "cruising" is a little bit of a stretch) all day on the Freeway at 100km/h. Capable enough to do it all reasonable well, while excelling at nothing.
What they're not.... is sexy.
You gotta buy Orange for that

Which is probably why I won't get one...even though they make perfect sense.
I don't see the water cooling as an issue. I used to ride my CR's in the woods; never had a problem with the cooling. Maybe I was lucky. A nice well placed stick in a radiator would send you home walking but how often does that happen? Probably less often than the missing master link, or the flat tire, or no gas, or crashed and broke the clutch lever, or crashed and broke the collar bone or the leg bone scenario.

Expecting it to make a big difference to the front end handling. 👍🏻

I seem to be setting off A LOT of car alarms now.
