i noticed on the reservoir caps for my 796 it reads use only dot 3-5 or something to that effect

so does this mean use dot 4, or anything between 3 and 5? dot 5 is silicone based so i doubt it would be the same, and the rear master cylinder says use dot 4... i was trying to look in the manual, but it really doesnt say

Use Dot 4 or 5.1 which are not silicone based.

Dot 4 is fine.

DOT 3,4 AND 5.1 are fine, though I personnel would only use 3 in a pinch.  DOT 5 is silicone, 5.1 is glycol based with the same boiling point as silicone.   DOT 5 is not compatible with glycol fluids.  Why does the cap say DOT5?  Beats me.

ill take a picture of it in the morning

DOT 5 in europe is not the same as DOT 5 in the states, at least that's what i've been told....

we call it DOT 5.1, they call the silicone stuff "silicone stuff"

YMMV

Not much to be confused about.  DOT 3, 4 or 5.1.

Don't pay through the nose for DOT4 either, go to Autozone. They carry it and it's like $3.98.

Most DOT4 is fine for street use, just flush the system on a regular basis, at least 1-2 times per season.

I use Castrol LMA for my street bikes with zero problems.  If you're boiling LMA on the street, you probably need to get arrested...  [leo]

When I squeeze the lever I stop, even after long periods of beating on it. Works for me.
