so installed a stebel on my 696. And it seems depending on the time of day (no idea what is doing this, has nothing to do with time of day) it either honks fine with both tones, or one of the tones is a squeek. It sounds terrible, loud, but terible.

they did say not to mount it on an angle, could this be doing it (there is really no concealed way to mount this thing without taking out the airbox and putting it in there.

any ideas?

where is it mounted? could be debris just stuck in it.

Could be a defective unit, also could be that you should have followed the instructions and mounted the unit vertically. As I understand it the manual warns sternly about improper mounting off axis. It leads to early failure of the unit.

Check your electrical connections as well, some have had trouble with them. Check ground wire. Those things require a lot of power off the bat. If it's the compact model, you can separate the horn from the compressor with a length of tubing if that helps mount it correctly. Lastly try reversing polarity.

i think its becuase its not vertical

if i lay on it, after a half second it goes full bore, but if its a quick honk, it squeeks

I had no problems with mine in the 6 months I had it installed on my 696 in exactly the same location under the front cowl and angled at around 30 degrees....

Double check your wiring.....  and if you're sure thats all fine..... you could have a defective unit.

There's been reports of 'em more or less DOA  >>  Stebel Failures
