This came out with the oil......

It's one inch long and I estimate one mm wide. (seal ring?)

Any idea from where?

I am not sure on the terminology here, but it maybe the spring that is around the oneway bearing at the starter gear.

That definitely sucks.  And another vote for sprag.

left side cover

remove the flywheel

if you're lucky, it hasn't completely exploded.  you might even get away with just putting on another spring.  i think those bearings run about $200 now.

Thanks guys [thumbsup]

Is the bearing and seal one piece - this spring securing a tight seal? (or, in my case, not?)

Where does the oil travel from and to if there is no sealing?

Do you think the seal will perform without the spring?

(I'm asking because I want to explore the possibilities of riding until this engine's next scheduled cover removal - four weeks)

If that spring is only one inch long and only one mm diameter, I don't think it could possibly be from the sprag.

I'd say it's from a very small seal.

sprag spring broke

when my sprag blew i had this same stuff in my oil, except mine was in 4-5 pieces..

that being said, if the bike still starts, it's probably not the sprag

I don't know if this is the complete length, but it IS about one mm thick

Suggestions?

Bike starts normally. Wouldn't it from the seal broken, but with a functional bearing?

the spring on a sprag is not a seal.  it's a retainer.  it circles the race and holds the bearing together.

Given the bike starts normally, I'm gonna say it's probably NOT the sprag.  If the retainer spring on the sprag breaks, it is usually a KAPLOOEY for the bearing.

I should have asked about that before..duh..

Gotta agree with ducatiz.  If that is a section of starter sprag spring the starter would turn, but the engine wouldn't

errazor

sorry to mislead you but the spring look so big at your picture.
If it is only 1 inch in its stretched state in your picture it most be coming from a really Small seal.
The clutch side on the clutch push rod have one Small seal on the dry clutch models.
