I would really like to run no belts, but the sun damage makes me nervous.

This isn't an issue unless you leave your bike outside when you're not riding.  Intermittent exposure to sun (UV) won't affect it.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

My friends:

He has had these Speedymoto "covers" on his bike for at least 2 years with no problems at all

Mine:

I chose the cheap route and cut the stockers.  So far so good!!

Qfactor

going on 5 years and 30k+ mi on mine w/o covers.

that's 4 New England winters, rain, snow & salt, UV exposure during work day, trackdays, dirt trail riding, traffic, etc...

No issues, no squeaks, no leaks. belts are changed every 3-6k mi.

the only thing I would be concerned about is the cover holding something that bounces up, rather than letting it drop off.

if a pebble hits a belt, it will most likely be zinged right away.  no cover, it goes back where it came from, but with an open cover like that it is more likely to be "captured" by the cover and then bounce around inside.

I was actually thinking about notching the bottom just for that reason.  Only concern is if it would make the cover to flimsy.  Then again it's not a load bearing part so I am thinking it should be ok.

exactly.  not load bearing and not structural in any way.

someone else did the same mod but put a lucite window there a while back.  also, another fellow used a mesh grating which looked nice.

I like the look of the lucite but I have heard that it gets ugly pretty quick and not really wanting the mesh look.  As open as it is, it still kinda blocks the full view. Maybe a more open pattern would work. I think the notches in the bottom are what i will be doing in the future
