My rear kickstand bolt won't grab thread. pulled it out and it's trashed.
does that mean my case is too?

is there a fix if the case is stripped?

He Man

yes. The case is aluminum, the bolt is steel.

Depending on the severity of the damage, you can either clean it out with the exact same thread and use extra locktite to fill the space.

If it is very damaged, you can go up to the next size thread. Though you will need to bore out the hole and retap it. Or you can use something like timesert if you want to keep the same size bolt.

If you are going to rethread it, dont try to thread it in one shot, for every 1/2 turn, i back it out and blast it with air and make sure its clean + i have lots of lube on hand. You dont want to jam it up and force the threader or else it will break and you'll be in another world of shit.

Raux

ok.. guess I'll get the local shop fix it up for me. I won't be able to ride for a few weeks soon, so a good time to get it done.

+1, Timeserts are good stuff. Real bacon-savers. Timeserts have steel thread. Don't do Helicoils, they are inferior to Timeserts. Biggest trouble you will have will be drilling the hole out perfectly perpendicular for the Timesert, but once you get that done you're set, and a Timesert is a very good permanent repair.

Is it an issue using steel in an aluminum case?

He Man

when 2 metals are in contact one of them tends to corrode. So you use chemicals like antisieze to prevent that from happening.

Another issue is when people have no patience. if you use a steel bolt thats rusting, and it wont budge, you SHOULD use certain methods such as an impact driver or heating the aluminum case to make the hole a bit bigger so the rust begins to break apart. Also sometiems people cross thread bolts and force it in. steel will certainly destroy the thread and you cant retap it most of the time.

If you are careful it shouldnt be an issue at all.

Raux

what timesert kit is correct for the rear kickstand bolt of the 696?

booger

Refer to your parts and/or shop manual for information on the correct metric size thread pitch for the bolt.

Then select the appropriate metric kit. Get a tap guide with the kit as well. It keeps the drill & tap perpendicular to the surface. A video on how it works:
