Loose chain - engine protection mode

I have a 2009 696 Monster.

I am wondering if a loose chain would cause my bike to go into "engine protection" mode.

It runs fine at idle but when driving if I let off the gas it will either shut down or go into some 'no power' mode where the engine light comes on and the oil light comes on. I can shut the bike off and start it back up and it runs fine again - until I start driving.

I just had a new stator put in it and an oil change - prior to that the bike was running mint.
