Hey guys im new from the NOVA area.

im have always been a fan of the moster and see an 800 as the right size for me. any ideas on a good place to find one?

There's two Coleman btw - one in Falls Church, one in Woodbridge.

Though it's not so close, the premier Duc shop in the area is Duc Pond.

You might put in a word with them. They aren't listing any Monsters at all for sale, but they are tuned into the community a lot more than colemans.

There's a number of other shops in the area that you could inquire at as well. Even shops that don't specifically sell new Ducs, they may have stuff in on trade.

And if the craiglist mavens read this, help the dude out with any 800 spottings you might find.

-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Don't know if you're set on an 800 or not however I found these on CL:

2000 Ducati monster - $3995 (richmond va) - http://richmond.craigslist.org/mcy/2345839488.html <- 900

Ducati M900 MD Inspected - $4000 (Towson) - http://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/2364877288.html

2000 Ducati Monster - $3000 (Woodbridge) - http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/2364788154.html <- 750, I think

Good luck with the search [thumbsup]

Do you want an M800 or an S2R 800?

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

A pre 2002 750 will be pretty down on power. The carby 750 didn't get much more going than the 620.

Good question ducatiz. At the price from colemans he listed I've got to assume S2R.. but the man did say 800

and he did say an 04, first year of the S2r was 05.  The 04 M800ie was basically the same motor as the S2R -- 73 vs 77hp

I would not touch with a 10 foot pole a 7 year old monster with only 165 miles on it, unless I got a warranty and the engine run-thru by a wrench and even then i wouldn't may over 4500 for it.

just too many deals out there right now to pay that much..  5300 can get you a nice condition S4 or even a nice s2r

what are the diff between the m800 and an s2r?

for starters...Single Sided Swingarm in the S2R vs a Dual Sided Swingarm on the M800

slightly different ergo's in terms of how the suspension was set out of the box, and the Magura fat-esque handlebar...

Another important different between that 800 and S2R800 will be that the gas tank of the older bike is steel and the new, plastic. Plastic that they have been having a lot of troubles with expanding due to the water held in the ethanol blend gas.

The polymer they used picks up water and expands. Get good news is that if you dry it out the do shrink back to an extent, and Ducati has been replacing them. But it will be something to look at when buying a monster from 2005 and later.

Easy signs of the expansion are that the front of the tank will be very close to, or contacting the keyway. On a proper tank, you should be able to fit a finger tip in between. Another hallmark is to look at the two bumpers on the bottom of the tank. They sit on the frame rails normally. If they are not centered up on the rail the tank is expanding.

Other important notes - you want to know the bike has 3 keys. Two black and the Red master. 1 missing black isn't the ned of the world. But the missing red can present a real hassle. I haven't been keeping track, but I *think* there's been some sucess in cloning the Reds. I know they can clone a black.

In the instance that you cannot get a Red key and the immobilizer system locks you out - it is very costly to get back in as it requires a new guage and ECU set.

Again, not been paying attention, but I hear there's a method to reflash the (non locked) ECU to eliminate the immobilizer.

Brakes - the older bikes will have better front brakes. in 2005 on the 620 and S2R800 they downgraded from 4 piston calipers on 320mm rotors to 2 pistons on 300mm.

Now, regarding that bike - this one would need a few hundred bucks of maintenance before it should hit the road. Cam belts on a duc are 12k miles or 2 years of service replacement items. Obviously hasn't hit 12k, but well over 2 years so thsoe need to be replaced. If you can do the work, it's about $80 in parts.

Tires need to be looked at as well. Tires like that have a recommended service life of about 5 years, regardless of miles.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

hows that look to any of you guys?

it looks like some idiot who knows nothing about bikes bought a bike and never rode it.

bikes are not lamps or computers.  if they sit unused, that usually means they are neglected.  if you buy that bike, you need to figure having it looked over by a mech, belts changed and service intervals done -- i would budget 500-700 into your purchase for that, which depends a lot on the bike.
