Painting Pipes
«
on:
May 13, 2011, 06:49:47 AM »
I am a 17 year old High Schooler and I was wanting to get new pipes, my problem is I have no money. My friend was telling me something about getting them painted with some type of ceramic paint? Does anybody know anything about this.. Your help would be very appreciated.
This is also my first post so I apoligize for any errors or things I should not be posting.

Ceramic coating is a process you send the pipes off to.
You can use exhaust paint to paint your exhaust, but the downpipes get VERY hot and usually cook the paint off after a while.
There are several companies that do ceramic coatings, here is one:

Go to your local John Deere dealer, they carry a rattlecan of black exhaust stack paint that is EXTREMELY durable.

For posting pictures

Sorry for posting the VHT link with no words. I was on the way out the door but wanted to be sure I posted that. VHT is good stuff. Duplicolor used to make a really good exhaust paint. Duplicolor bought VHT though and dropped their own exhaust coating to promote VHT. If you don't want to drop the bucks for ceramic coating (like powder but higher heat tolerances) then that is the way to go. Also if it fails not like you dropped a lot of money on it.

Saturday night I went to Home Depot and bought high heat paint, I painted them Sunday morning and I am very happy with the result, considering it cost 4 dollars and I did it myself, having no painting experiance. I will post pictures sometime today when I am not in school. Thanks everybody for the tips, they helped a lot.

Do you ride to school? That would just be the best.

I use to, I will next year tho. I always feel like the Bad Ass riding to school on a Ducati, I just can't wait to get her painted up red and maybe some new bar end mirrors.

I am in the middle of painting my pipes. I'm using, like everyone has said, some high temp exhaust spray cans. One tip I can offer is look up how to's for cleaning and prepping your pipes. And USE A PRIMER!!! I got lazy and skipped this step and now I'm regretting it big time, I have a lot of sanding and respraying ahead of me

For VHT and Dupli Color they do. I used a primer when I did my headlight ring. Made for very even results.
