Gotta say there is no way I would let a grandchild of mine play with a dead critter, particularly one that was wild.  Abuse?  Not in the classic sense, but in terms of negligence, a little like sending your child to play in a garbage dump.  Hopefully this was a prop, not a dead, possibly diseased varmint.

Oh, this is not aimed at bobspapa.  I do appreciate the humor..

negligence as you described is abuse, under the law.

i'm not saying i would go after these people -- abuse is situational -- but i would certainly yell at them.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Their dog killed the squirrel...it's not like it was diseased and died and she found it.

It's no different than handling a dead animal after you killed it hunting. Ease up people!

2 year-olds don't hunt and don't know how to handle dead animals..

When was the last time you went hunting and slung a deer over your shoulder and nuzzled it?  Like ticks much?

As far as I know, after you shoot the deer you are up to your armpit inside said deer gutting it.  In my book that's a bit beyond nuzzling.

If getting a tick constitutes an abusive situation would it be safe to say, then, that allowing your kid to wash with regular soap instead of anti-bacterial soap is also abusive?

I didn't nuzzle it, but I did carry it over my shoulder (mule deer...not your tiny east coast white tails...so it took two of us  ;)). I remember watching the ticks abandoning ship as we walked out. Big deal...I survived no worse for wear...and I've done it multiple times.

I also killed lots of wild rabbits, squirrels, birds...you name it. No big deal.

Besides, her dog killed it...presumably by biting it. Is the dog now infected with whatever it supposedly has? Can she not play with him anymore?

Some people gut and some people take it to someone else who guts it.  Either way, you know what you're doing and as an adult, you've accepted the possibility you may get a tick or something.

A child doesn't know how to handle a dead animal, and the parents weren't instructing her to keep it away from her face, which they should have.

And to shit on your analogy, anti-bacterial soap is slowly being taken off the market since it's been found triclosan is an endocrine interrupter.  Kids who use it too much end up with premature facial hair and cancer.

My 5 year old son had a big ole tick crawling around his neck while hiking in Colorado a few weeks ago.  Luckily we got it before it took hold.

Who does that? First, who wants to pack out an un-gutted deer...way too heavy. You guys shoot them off the highway or something? Second, I'm pretty sure they need to be cleaned quickly so they don't spoil.

If a person can't gut their own deer, then they shouldn't be hunting.

...and on the lighten up note..I appreciated the boob zoom!  [thumbsup] [laugh]
