Just curious if anyone was running a car tire on their Monster. Buddy of mine just fitted one on his Buell lightning and I'm intrigued.

They look like they'd be great if you never planned on leaning into a turn.  [roll]

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

if your looking for wide tires that can still turn, maybe check out the tires the Diavel is running.

Google "darkside motorcycle tire". Experienced riders are doing it and writing articulate reviews. It is a debateable mod. The only reason I posted it here is because I was curious and its a Monster specific question. But if you want to be a provocative troll and laugh, go right ahead. I never even said I wanted to do it, was just curious. Good lord does the internet bring out the cockroaches or what?
I googled it and came up with this disclaimer on the darkside site.
"Disclaimer:
We do not advocate the use of car tires on motorcycles. We are only offering other peoples experience's and it is up to each individual to decide for themselves, the merits of car tires on motorcycles. If you choose to put a car tire on a motorcycle, you do so at your own risk."

Like I said before, it appears for a 240 tire the Diavel tires are turning some heads

My chippy response wasn't directed toward you, Raux thank you.

i figured..

Reading that site... they are runnig tires at 110 psi with many of them exploding on install, etc.
not a very smart idea from what I can tell, and that's their site giving the info.

Seriously, such a bad idea. the only 'bike' i would run car tires on would be the can-am.

Ya, sure.  With over 5,000 posts I'm a provocative troll?   [laugh]

Seriously,  I thought you were making an attempt at spoofing the car tire.

Hence the laughter...   You sound a touch sensitive there.   :-\

If I in any way hurt your feelings, I'm sorry.  That was not my intent.

I'll go crawl back under the old pizza box with the other cockroaches now...  ;)

I do know that  rubbish like "you can't lean into a corner" or "you'll be riding on the sidewalls " has been debunked and those statements are only made by parrots trying to sound cool. Hadn't heard of them exploding when mounted, that doesn't make much sense to me i'll follow up on that. None the less I doubt i'd risk it, I just dig the look of fat tires.

Oh, well, name calling makes you sound really cool.  Again,  [roll]

Enjoy your stay here while calling other long time members trolls, cockroaches, and parrots.  [thumbsup]

Thanks for posting that.

Most of my Monstering is done on the highway and my rear tyres become squared off rapidly.

I'm due for a new rear soon and will see if I can find a suitable auto replacement, great idea ! !

People will do most anything and some will think it works.  A motorcycle turns by rotating on the tire when you lean it over.  Can you get the bike to turn on a car tire?  Yes, but not well and you are looking at impending disaster when you go over the edge of the tire, ummm...premature low side.  Good idea?  Maybe for a Gold Wing rider who does a lot of slab riding and is willing to deal with the trade off.

I had the pleasure of following a Harley with a drag slick on a straight expressway.  Granted, a drag slick is even flatter than a normal car tire, but he had his hands full.

Yep, starting off with a squared off tire will fix that.

what I've noticed they are doing is putting the wider tires on smaller rims and overpressurizing them to give them a more rounded profile. That first photo below isn't indicative of the trend on the site i saw.

but malforming a tire to get the shape you desire puts pressure on the bonds of the rubber at places it was never intended to have pressure.. then you pump it up to 40-60-100+ PSI... IF it stays on the bead... it's just asking for trouble.

It's kind of the opposite of the lowriders who couldn't afford the correct low profile tires so they would stretch skinny tires onto wider rims.

either way... ghetto and wrong.

buy the correct tire for the application. Manufacturers spend years... no, decades to perfect tires... why question and throw out all that research because some guy on the internet says so?

well....a former co-worker of mine is running a Toyo car tire on the back of his Honda VTX1800 ( which he is running a VTX1300 rear driveshaft for a different final drive ratio) and he has said on numerous occasions how great it is cruising the highway and straighter roads, but what a fight it is to muscle the bike over in tight twisty turns....and based on how I personally ride and knowing how a tire feels in profile difference ( some carcases are somewhat V shaped, some are more rounded, and some that get squared off after some good slab riding) when dipping the bike into a turn....I personally would never consider it, unless I was riding a cruiser that I slabbed all the time and pretty much never rode in the tight stuff....

Another long time troll here. (Maybe it's because I was around since the days of TOB)

A few years ago, a guy pulled up on a metric cruiser with a car tire mounted. I noticed it immediately when he turned into the parking lot. The inside tire wall was pinched down significantly while leaning as all the weight was focused on the tire's edge. The sidewalls on a car tire aren't designed for it.

I asked him about the tire and he claimed it handled the same as the motorcycle tire he had on before. All this told me is that he either has no feel for his bike's handling or he was trying to convince himself it was fine.

This topic has come up on the sport-touring threads too... Watching the videos, you realize it's "possible", but it just somehow feels wrong. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that low cost and long life wasn't attractive for a bike tire.

I was thinking of putting Pilot Roads on my Monster for longevity (since most of my riding ends up as commute or distance weekends, and results in flat centers on the back tire). But then I decided to get a second bike for the long hauls, and kept a sport tire on the Monster to fulfill my desire for twisties.

I put Michelin Pilot 2CTs on the Mini Cooper.
