Boots getting scratched badly - Monster 696, sharp edges?

My Alpinestars SuperTech R boots are getting scratched badly on the inboard sides (facing the bike). I cannot figure out why they are getting scratched this badly other than that there are sharp edges. I have a 09 696, all stock external parts. I have difficulty finding my sidestand while I am on the bike, so I can attest that the lower thermoplastic part of the heel is scratched by me searching for the sidestand. However, I cannot figure out why the leather is getting cut.

Anyone experience something similar and figure out a solution? I planned to go over the sides of the bike with a grinder to find any metal parts that have burs and edges. I know I cut my shins a few times on the foot rests when I wore shorts and just went to move the bike around in my garage for maintenance.

Sounds like that POS bike is messing up your boots big time. I'd dump it ASAP before real boot damage is done. I'm sure some friendly DMFer will take that boot abuser off your hands cheap and fast.

Translated: I have no freaking idea what's doing it. Sharp edges somewhere for sure. 696 owners chime in.

I have a 2010 696 and haven't observed this at all wearing alpinestars smx5 boots, or any of my other shoes. Sure that you are holding your feet on the rear sets fully on the peg and not holding them twisted inwards towards the bike in some way?

I normally ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs. I have size 12 Supertech R's. I did have to adjust the gearshift lever to the maximum amount so I could shift comfortably if that tells you anything, but I do see some scratches on the right boot as well.

put some cream or shoe polish (something you can get off) on the boots. ride it and see where it leaves a mark on the rearset

maybe post a pic of your rearset and the scratches? on my 796 with vertigo's i dont have any issues with scratching.

I think I found the cause. The standard rear sets / foot pegs have a mold flash on the outermost tip. I have actually cut my legs a few times on these pegs just moving the bike around in the garage. This edge is razor sharp. I managed to file them down and used 1000 grit sandpaper to round out the edges. Hopefully this fixes the problem. I noticed my left boot is really scuffed up on the inboard leather, the top thermoplastic area, and the bottom thermoplastic area. The right boot is only slightly scuffed because the edge wasn't as sharp and I don't have to use a sidestand there.

you laugh... my freaking garage has dust all the time that coats my tires when i roll out in the morning...

Normally I wouldn't care about scuff marks on the boots, but these scratches were getting deep and were starting to tear the sides of the boots. The Supertech R are over $400 a pair and having them develop holes on the sides is kind of dumb. If I wore them out on the soles, sliders, etc... I wouldn't even complain or post on a board.

Sounds like maybe you found the issue and have hopefully dulled it's boot cutting edge. I wouldn't like my scooter messing up my $400 boots either. Shit stirring gene is off today.

I have a freshly coated driveway and the garage dust combined with the driveway make a slippery combination. I've had to "dirt bike" it when my rear kicked out a few times.

Plan on painting the floors one of these years.
