How much oil should I put in my 05 S2R 800?  About to do an oil change tonight.  Thought it was 3 qts but just want to make sure I don't over fill.  Is the standard rule, just fill until the window on the right side is half full?

emphasis on the ish.  Use the sight glass.  It's pretty accurate.

Partially fill your filter, fill to the full line with the bike vertical and level, start bike, recheck oil level and top off as needed.  Probably not much more than three quarts will do it in a small case motor.

Put the bike on the sidestand, not a rearstand. Let the oil drain out while hot for about a half hour. Pull the oil screen as well to get as much oil out as possible. Tilt the bike off the sidestand after pulling the screen to drain out thoroughly. Replace the screen, filter, & drain plug, then fill with 3 quarts and start the bike up to get the oil circulating. Then tilt the bike up off the sidestand to where it's perpendicular to the floor and check the oil level in the sightglass. Top up as needed.

Doing it this way gets as much of the old oil out as possible and prevents overfilling. Put a piece of aluminum foil over the midpipe before draining the oil so it doesn't smoke on startup.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Two question - is theres a better 24 stroke oil out there.  Friends use Royal People, Mobil, MOtul and Repsol.  Anyone have a preference or know which works best?  Also when draining the oil I barely got 2 quarts.  Is this normal?

Well make sure it's good for wet clutches as a primary concern.

I use mobil1 10-40. Good stuff and can be had at AutoZone around DC for 8 bucks a qt
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I hope you mean 4 stroke.  Any MA (motorcycle/wet clutch compatible), preferably full synthetic will do.

Mine seems to take about 3-ish... give or take a half.

FWIW, i've never added 3qt's to my 620 at once.

Perhaps I've never got it completely drained.
i drain it while on the rear stand as the drain plug is bottom center.
The next change will be the first where I've removed the screen.

You can find Moto specific oils which consider life in a wet clutch afaik.

620's generally don't have an additional oil cooler which would add to the capacity of the bike for lubrication specifications.
