Sprocket carrier retaining nut....

....Anyone heard of the retaining wire/pin breaking due to metal fatigue?

Today while I was riding, I experienced a total loss of acceleration or engine braking. Thought it was the transmission internals.

SHIT! I thought to myself.  :o

Pulled over. Shifted through all the gears with the clutch pulled in, no odd sounds/feelings.

Hmm... I thought to myself.  ???

Looked over chain/sprocket assembly....turns out the retaining nut and retaining wire/pin (whatever you feel like calling it) are missing. This caused my sprocket carrier to walk itself out from the rear axle, and when the splines disengaged, I lost all power.

Needless to say I am thankful that I have friends nearby with a pickup truck and someone upstairs who helped me out.

I hope this isn't due to any mischief in my neighborhood. That's all I'll say about that. Parts on order. [bang]

Were they wired?

I always safety wire the retaining clips on both nuts on my SSS because it's been known to happen..

I use safety wire AND zip ties
If you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you.  If you can't see Chuck Norris, you may be only seconds away from death.

I've seen quite a few bikes come in with the nut finger tight and the wire clip in place.

My 996 used to do that.

I found that cleaning and greasing the threads before torquing helped.
