Hi guys,
I am looking at buying my first Ducati ;D. Could someone tell me the differences between the 2000 model to the 2001 model Monster 900's besides the seat height? All info is much appreciated.
Cheers

If I recall, both are fuel injected models - I think the last of the carb'd were in 99.

There were a number of different models - S models, city models, dark models.
The S typically gave you better suspension - the city had raised bars, the dark was the bare bones model.

There's likely to be differences in suspension, braking components were the same iirc. the engines were pretty much the same, tho there may be differences in the ECU.

Seriously, you're probably better asking this in the tech forum - and check to see if there is info in the FAQs. More knowledge base in the wider community.

Come back here to get local info though!

Differences off the top of my head

Oil Cooler (More rounded off on the 2001 and I believe it was designed by KTM!)
Triple Clamps
Beertray (2001 had 3 mount points as opposed to 4 and is a pain to find an aftermarket/replacement)
Rear calliper positioned above swingarm on 2001 as opposed to below on 2000

Cheers

Interesting how the S4 Monster is round about the same price as a 900 (according to a quick lookup on bikesales).

an aftermarket beer tray ???

thought they were all chopped off and thrown in the bin ;)
i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

I hear you.  But good luck trying to find a DP style short tail replacement for any "3 hole" beer trayed Monster.  I tried (hard) with my 01 when I had it, either genuine or aftermarket and failed.  Only option aside from a full tail chop was a DP CF tray of the same shape as the placko original.

From the ducatimonster.org FAQ (hold the flames!)
Quote2001 upgrades and data:
• Available in four models: M900S, M900Metallic, M900Dark and M900Cromo. No 2001 Std ie.
• Increased diameter engine mounting bolts, new matching crankcases, new frame lugs, new oil pump and other engine internal upgrades.

2000 upgrades and data:
• Complete make over for 2000, after 6 years without substantial changes, include: EFI replaced carbs in 2000, HP increased to 78 (from 74), new hollow axle front forks upped to 43mm from 41mm diameter, full tach/speedo replaced the speedo cluster of 1994-1999, lighter wheels, Goldline Brembo upgrade, smoother 748 transmission, beautified rear fender and turn signals, new fuel tank with improved knee cutout area for taller riders. Retracting sidestand gone.

When they changed the tank they also change the shape of the seat, so you can't use the '00 tank on a pre '00 monster without changing the seat too. They also changed the "suicide stand" for a regular stand with an ignition cutout (that apparently doesn't let you warm the bike up idling in neutral in the sidestand) - the sidestand also grew a "ball on a stick" to kick it down (with which grounds out earlier than the old sidestand). Another change was to the handlebars - the inside of the ends changed so the old plastic bar end plugs don't fit the current bars 'cause the holes in the end are smaller.

S model on my 01 had alloy swingarm, 3 way adjustable Showa forks, and adjustable rear shock as well as previously mentioned rear calliper mount change for 01.  S also got carbon fibre exhaust heat shield, side covers and front fender.

If you end up getting one I've got a set of Titanium Termi slip ons with DP ECU and open airbox lid sitting in the garage that I'm about to eBay once I get off my backside and take a few pics.  If you or anyone else is interested....

Grrr - I have just spent the last hour discovering this!! My beer tray is cracked and so I was looking for a replacement. When that appeared impossible I started investigating eliminator kits.

I am hoping this one will work. It looks like maybe they cleverly designed it to work with the 3 or 4 hole bikes. But it looks like it might require cutting too.

I had a 4 hole carbon beer try on my yr2000 900ie Monster. I simply drilled 2 holes in the frame and used a washer to mount it. All very easy.

Regarding the differences, the 2000 monster had a different rear suspension setup hence the ride height difference. It has the 'hoop' ride height adjuster and the 2001 changed to the rode type. The rear shock changed as well

The main cluster also changed a bit as the number of lights increased. I'm not sure but I think the 2001 saw the introduction of the immobiliser circuity to the ECU.

The seat also changed which is relevant for any after market one you may be looking for.

Dont know if anything changed in the cylinder heads / cams
