look into taking a freighter across the atlantic. i bet its a bit less costly.

Except for being bikeless 2 - 3 weeks each way, it's a good option - about 1,500 total to and from the east coast.

The insurrance is what worries me. Not the price, but I'm not sure if any companies do this.

instead of being bikeless, take the boat yourself...
Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pigs like it...

Do you think I can ride on deck?

shipping by boat will take a while and customs can be a hassle.  I just had my bike sent from the US to Sweden, took nearly 5 weeks.  It's not cheap either... I'd just buy a bike when you get to the US  then sell it before you leave.

What about shipping to Canada and ride across the border. Seems like a better option and a way to skip customs on the US side. Buying and selling is your other best option. Just need someone on this side to help with it all.

What? They dont have any customs procedures in Canada??  I dont see that as any easier or less costly an option.  But you're right, if stopintime isnt wedded to the idea of doing it on his own bike, then buying and selling is a good alternative.

I also think that is possible to air freight a bike from Europe to USA and back for way less than $10K.   IMO air freight has advantages (other than speed of course) over sea shipment.   When your bike is part of a shipping container.... it can sit around dock-side waiting to be unloaded, so even if the vessel arrives in port on schedule theres still the possibility of long delays eating into your travel plans.

Im sure they do but less restrictive than the USA.

For example, if you want to ride in Thailand, its easier to ship your bike to Malaysia then ride across. So the option may be there.
