I'm thinking about upgrading from a 620 to a S2R 1000. Has anyone gone from a smaller monster to a S2R and if so can you comment on the new bike and any differences from the smaller bike.

Also any S2R owners out there that ran in to any issues with the bikes or expensive repairs?

Thanks!

I recommend it! I went from a 2001 Monster 750 to an S2R1000 with full Termignoni exhaust. They are quite different. The power from the dual spark 1000 engine is awesome. My only complaint is the engine's difficulty maintaining idle. Once it warms up enough it's good. The stock suspension settings are crap, but they are adjustable. I worked on them for a while to make the bike feel more connected to the road.

I went from an M800 to the S2R1k and the duel spark motor is great. I've added a full Arrows exhaust end eliminated the o2 sensor. Would have added a PC III but they never made one for S2R1k. Recently upgraded the suspension with Racetech goodies: springs and valves and it feels like different bike, well worth the $$.

i did the exact upgrade that you are contemplating.  rode an '03 620 for 2 years, then bought an '06 s2r1k.  no regrets whatsoever.  power is great, as others have said.  suspension is so much better.  love the dry clutch.

i too had issues with stalling and holding idle as mentioned above.  but one trip to my mechanic for some valve adjustments and TB re-syncing cured that problem.

let me know if you have any more questions about the upgrade.  [thumbsup]

Same here.  After not riding since my childhood, I got back to riding on a 03 M620.  Absolutely enjoyed it for 1 1/2 year.  I then upgraded to a S2R1000.  It's a completely different animal.  I think there are quite a few of us here who did the same.

Below was the link to my post.

The only downside of that upgrade was the tank - going from a 03 steel tank to a 07 polymer tank.  You will find out more later.  ;)

It's great to hear from so many riders that have upgraded. Goat_herder I remember reading your post a while ago thinking it would be very cool to get a S2R.

I think this is what happens to many 6xx monster riders. You get through all the normal mods and then you start thinking about suspension and brake and as the $$$$$ add up you realize it makes more sense to just trade up.

I never thought there would be any reason to need a 1000cc bike. The little 600 if pushed is really enough for the twisty back roads I like to ride. But the suspension and brakes are the weak link. Also I have to say on long trips it would be nice not to be at the top end of the RPM range for hours at 85mph.

Hopefully I find something nice on the east coast before fall.

There have been quite a few S2R1000 on sale in the For Sale section.  There might still be some there.  Also, keep you eye out on ebay and craigslist.  Good luck bike hunting!

Do the swap. S4R forks have linear rate springs, much better valving, and Titanium Nitride coating on the sliders.

S2R1000 forks are really just shitty low-end forks with adjusters. They can be made to work a lot better, but only after significant expense. A revalve and respring minimum. The S4R forks should work loads better as a matter of course.

You could then sell off your stock forks for a tidy financial offset. As I understand it parts like that are hard to come by in Australia.

I went from an 00' 750 to an 08' S2R. There are many improvments. SSS, better brakes, better suspension, a little more HP ( my 750 dyno'd at 80 after jet kit) I guess that my S2R has 85. Fuel injected (pros and cons) And depending on your likes, it will become increasingly difficult to find first gen styling. IMHO you've just gotta do it.
08' S2R 1K   That was close  damn near lost a $400 hand cart.

I loved my 620, but the hoonability of the s2r is incredible!

Me too, went from 03 620 to S2R1K.  Both great bikes but the S2R is definitely the next step up, and the best all-around Monster IMHO.

Just FYI, mine is for sale, but haven't listed it here yet.

Interesting thread. I'm on a 620 at the moment. I LOVE it, more than enough power for my current level of ability. I can tell that in a year or so I am going to want to move onwards and upwards - the acceleration doesn't feel so amazing anymore now that I'm used to it  [roll]

Great to see so many people have moved to bigger Monsters and are happy with the upgrade, I don't think I would buy any other model of naked bike now so I'm glad there are big brothers to the 620!
