Sigh, took off today and forgot to take off my disc lock...

yes, i'm an idiot... got ready to go to work to enjoy this nice weather spell we've been having on the east coast, got my gear on and put the bike in gear and... came to a sudden stop.  and then i heard my xena disc alarm going off.

so as of right now, i've noticed a vibration coming from the brakes when i use them... it's noticeable and it feels like as if there section of the rotor that is not flat, as in it's not so much a vibration as a  section of non smooth rotor.  you can easily notice it at low speeds, where it's smooth braking, vibration/bump, smooth, vibration etc etc.  i'm probably going to take it to the dealer and have them take a look, but it's most likely that i've just screwed up the rotor right?  any idea how much this will cost me?

and offhand, i would like to say that the they might have reduced the sensitivity of the xena xx14 a bit too much compared to the xn15.  the engine was on while i was putting on my gear and it never went off till i actually moved the bike.

Yeah your rotor is scrap.  What happened is that the lock pulled on your rotor and whatever hole it was in stretched and caused it to "wrinkle" and expand.  So that is why your getting the vibrations.
I live vicariously thru myself......

I hook it on and cross it across the bow aas it were, so that I see it when I am putting in my key...

thanks for the comments guys, just spoke to the dealer, going to swing by tomorrow to have them take a look.

is it dangerous to ride with the rotor like this?  or is it ok for the short term?  they are going to take a look and then will have to order parts...  wondering if i should stay off the bike till the parts come in.

worst thing is... i have one of those bungies, but i couldnt really figure out how to attach it to the xena.  i guess i'll try again and see if i can get something working.  it's a pretty tight fit though.

here's a pic of how it looks on a bike:

One unasked for perspective.

When I started riding back in the early 90s I spent money on some disc locks and cable locks etc.

I would put them on the bikes when I was parking them out of site, overnight or something like that.  [leo]

Once in a while I'd put them on a bike like at a diner stop or the like.  [leo]

I'd even use the cable to connect the rear wheels of 2 of my bikes in the garage if I was going to be away for a long weekend or something.  [leo]

Then one morning I woke up - realized that IF someone REALLY wants any bike all it takes is a couple of guys to lift it into the back of a truck or van.  :o

I realized THAT'S what insurance is for.  ;)

And maybe by about 1994 or 1995 I said "SCREW IT" and I haven't used one of those locks since.  8)

I don't even lock the steering heads anymore.

And in maybe 150k miles since that point, not a single person has mucked with any of my bikes not at home, not locally, not touring etc.

Actually what do these locks sell for these days? I should probably sell them and spend the money on something important like BEER...  [drink]

YMMV do whatever makes you feel warm and IZ_.

the reason i put on the disc lock is more of a padlock kind of thing... and also because the first month i got the bike, someone dropped it in my garage.  never found the guy and i got paranoid about the security of my bike.  i figured having some kind of alarm on it would deter them.

sigh.  i really really hate that person now.

I use a standard Kryptonite U-Lock/Disklock with a pair of orange reminder cables for 1 simple purpose...I use it to lock my helmet and/or jacket to the bike if I am able to do so in certain situations...because I also realized like KevM said, that if a theif REALLY wants it, he'll get it no matter what...and they usually don't muck about with locks on site when they pick up the bike and carry it away in a truck/van...

You probably don't want to be riding like this.  If the rotor is warped enough that it is catching the pad, the brake fluids could heat up and lock the wheel.

I've doen this a couple of times myself so you're not the only idiot here.

I may be completely wrong but unless you were full throttle off the start I think your rotor will be fine. The feeling may be in your head, after this happened to me I swore for days that I had really messed something up. Not the case at all.

Don't forget that most rotors are close to a quarter inch thick meant to heat and cool and withstand torsional stress from braking and, in most cases, not warp.

Won't hurt to have someone look at it though, and if you do need a new one check here. OEM rotors for around $150...

Dude, if you are getting vibrations in the controls when braking after possibly damaging your front rotor you should NOT be riding your bike, something is wrong!!

The slightest tweak in your rotor can cause uneven contact with your brake pads and result in massively accelerated brake wear. Not to mention, you might go to engage the brakes and they are not there to help you.

I would replace the rotor and the pads.
Is this thing on?

^^^ what he said....this is called the perfect excuse to upgrade the front anchors...

and throw away the disk-loc gadget...even if it stopped a thief the hard way (like you experienced)

they will likely leave your bike on the ground stomped to shit as punishment anyway

Thought-

Did that this morning....FAACCKKKK! EBC front rotor is bent  [bang].  In neutral the bike has full pressure, however, the minute I put her in gear and travel any distance I get no front brake pressure.  Time to replace the entire right side rotor that I just purchased a week ago.

Right now beginning to hate what stupidity costs.

disc locks are a detterent for the simple theives, not the real pros they are smarter and just pull up a van and have it in 10 seconds if even that long, more like 7 from that one youtube video of it happening in nyc.

and that reminder cable i thought works well i would put it on the throttle side so i couldn't miss it at start up.
