Biker death in Fairfax yesterday

She turned left in front of them.  No comment as to their speed.  Plenty of people zoom that intersection and there are plenty of near-misses.

Every time I hear this I think: distracted driver. Talking or texting, putting on make-up, eating, reading, whatever, the driver had her head lodged all the way up her @$$. >:( >:( >:(

Yeah... especially in that area. Lots of soccer mom types and various inattentive drivers.

I hope the injured rider and his passenger heal swiftly.

If speed nor alcohol on the part of the biker was involved, then it's reasonable to assume the car driver is more at fault.  If the biker was driving at correct speed, then she entered the intersection too early.

I hope she is prosecuted. 

I'm terrified every time I get out.  People in this area drive for SHIT. 

I've never seen so many TIMID drivers in my life.  People who sit in the turn lane and let opening after opening go by.

Yep, this is why I try to avoid that neck of the woods at all cost. Even when in a cage.

That being said, it's a sad day for many...  :(

If I remember correctly, single vehicle mcy crashes are usually because the rider lost it in a corner (duh) but the #1 reason for bike / car accidents is this very thing: car turned left in front of oncoming rider. While distraction is getting worse every day, the problem with the left turning car is usually because the driver misjudged the speed of the motorcycle and thought they had time. I don't know if I buy it.

My personal belief is that the driver is looking for cars and doesn't "see" the bike and goes ahead, then suddenly realizes too late "hey, there was something there". I've looked right at people, had them look right back at me, and then go.

All this boils down to: be extra alert. Sadly sometimes nothing you do can avoid the outcome. And wear good gear - I think the posts from this weekend show that doesn't need to be said to folks here (well, maybe me).

This is why I use the PathBlazer.  90% of the time, people in oncoming traffic slow down or stop.  It grabs attention.

Some ppl have said they think it's a police or emergency vehicle.

Annoying is good.  I turn it off when I get to a red light though.

i can safely say that's never remotely happened.  i've run a pathblazer on my S2R since I got it in 2005 and even in Queens on the LIE,  people pull away.  Never once had someone react aggressively.

You know (I hope) that I jest (but they are hideously annoying to other riders imo - maybe worth it as they do get my attention when I see them coming).
