I'm in the process of buying a 2009 Monster 1100 with a stock exhaust (It's so beautiful!). Are there any mods I can do to lower the dB coming from the bike? Something more manageable for living in the city and having your neighbors right on top of you... I've read about DB Killers, but they are always mentioned with aftermarket exhaust systems. Are there addons to the stock exhaust? Would an aftermarket be quieter? Thanks in advance for the responses. I'm new to Ducati's, and I'm really excited to learn more about this amazing bike! Sean

You want something quieter than the stock exhaust?? That's about as quiet as it's going to get.

yeah if it has the unmodified stock exhaust - that's going to probably be the bottom limit you're going to hit. The other control will be your right hand. As long as you keep the RPMs down you can keep it quieter. DB killers are made for aftermarkets to muzzle them to more Stock levels. An aftermarket exhaust with DB killers is not going to provide you any noise reduction. it'll probably go up a bit, even with DB Killers in.

stock exhaust on the 1100 have an exhaust valve to quiet under 4000 rpm.
keep it in the low rpm area and you will be as quiet as it can get.
the only other options is to get an oversized aftermarket, put in a catylitic converter, keep the exhaust valve, and severely restrict it with a heavily modded db killer and extra sound damping material.
but then you will probably hurt power and or the bike.

or get this... http://www.brammo.com/empulse/have you heard the stock exhaust yet? it's pretty tame already, almost no bass thump which is what will bother the neighbors. i doubt you would get complaints from it.

Thanks for all of your responses! Ideally I want to get the richness of the ducati sound without shaking the walls. If the stock exhaust will do that, then things will be good.
I'm picking up the bike tomorrow so I'll report back. Thanks again!

stock exhaust on the 1100 have an exhaust valve to quiet under 4000 rpm. Aw...c'mon Raux.... we've been thru this a zillion times. The exhaust flapper valve does nothing other than chirp shut/open at start-up.... the only other time it flaps closed is @ 3000rpm when in neutral (for static noise testing).

Yup, once the thing is in gear Mr Flappergate is surplus hardware. (When M1100 was first released some dealers were telling the tyre-kickers that the exhaust flapper was to increase back-pressure for "better mid-range response" ). To be 100% clear: The exhaust flapper does NOTHING once you're mobile . Dump it and get a Duc.ee at the very least.

I have just had the "Exhaust Valve " issue with only 1700 k's on the clock.
What are the options to ditch the pregnant dog for good ?
I thought I'd change the system down the track but if at 3000 k's the same thing happens then that will be the day.

What is the "Exhaust Valve"' issue? It doesn't do anything in gear and to my knowledge hasn't had any issues. To get rid of it you can get a Duc.ee or flash your ECU.

The Issue was the engine light appeared.
Looking at the Error code it listed the Exhaust valve as the cause. Not knowing what this was and being under warranty it went to the dealer.
The gate valve had become stuck, not sure which way as the bike didn't seem affected, but this then sheared the nylon gears on the motor that operates it. I'm assuming these are the "fusible" link in the system.
I was told that this is $1400 replacement if it was out of warranty.
That's why the question.......
