As far as I've found so far the ECU does not seem to be available by itself through online dealers. Is this correct or am I just not looking in the right places? My local dealer quoted around $1200++ for the ECU alone, add nearly 10% local tax &  vomit. This would be for my '08 S4RS with the termi 'shorty' slip on.

All seems good & smooth over 4.5k, but she's giving me a little bit of a fight in the lower revs. Once in a great while I'll get a surprise 'surge' going around a slow corner in first. It's a little unnerving & I worry one of these times it's going to get me.

Would this DP ECU be the answer & solution to the bit of roughness I'm getting in the lower RPM range, or would it need to be combined with a PCIII (or other solution) to really shine? I'm not so much seeking for optimum power at this point, but more for improved smoothness & driveability -- that is without going back to the stock cans!

I've read through the sticky on Closed Loop ECU mods & have gleaned some knowledge, but I'm unsure how sure-fire of a solution going this (rather expensive) route would be. There are so many here that hold vastly more technical knowledge than I (which is actually embarrassingly little). Who's got recommendations for me? Is there a simple solution I'm just missing?

The DP ECU would do wonders for the bike. In your current config you would need the one for "slip-ons" not the full system. I have the full system and it transformed the bike. Still had some issues with it being too rich down low & mid-range and used a PCIII to get it "tits", plus a few exrta ponies and some torque....
I would say you could just use the PCIII but you still have your O2 intact and if you disconnect it you will have to stare at a "check engine" light the whole time. The DP unit does not even look for the O2 (it is a race version after all). You could buy the complete slip-on system, keep the ECU and sell the rest here!! I see it all the time... I think you could get the complete slip-on system, sell the stuff you don't want and come out ahead on the deal!

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example!

The slip-on version is very little bit cheaper.  Ducati Omaha sells online if you want to save on tax.  You will still need to do a TPS reset though.  I would talk to your local dealer who will be doing the TPS reset and ask for a 10% off discount.  From everything I've read, the DP ECU is one of the best way to go.
