I was just wondering... wouldn't it be nice to have a modern UJM with modern tech (fuel injection, modern suspension dynamics, etc.)?  It'd be something between a Suzuki TU250x and its $4k price tag and a Triumph Thruxton and its ~$8800 price tag... is there some sort of middle ground?

Kawasaki's W650 is a nice Japanese retro bike thAt may fit your needs if you can find one.

Fuel injection isn't the end all/ be all to motorcycling.  There are plenty of modern tweaks you can make to carbed bikes to make them even more reliable.  My Yamaha XS650 had upgraded coils and a digital spark trigger that replaced points- started first kick everytime even when cold.  I say you take half of your low end budget ($2k) and by a classic UJM in great shape.  There are probably about 8 a week of various models on Craigslist here in Sacramento that I would consider "excellent" condition.

Hmm... good points, all. I'll revisit 'list and see what's available... some are nicely done, that's true.
The W650 does look nice; will keep a lookout for that! But yes, that's something like I was thinking about!
