Correct 2V Valve Clearance Specs

For some reason, I'm having trouble finding the correct valve clearance specs for 2V motors.  I have a 2000 M900Sie and am doing the valves this weekend -- any help is appreciated!

what luck, i am measureing mine today, just came up to rewatch the CA-cycleworks ideo one last time before diving in. 


any way, my manual calls for

opener:
adjusting clearence: 0.10 - 0.15mm
checking clearance:  0.05 - 0.15mm

closer:
adjusting clearence: 0.00 - 0.05mm
checking clearance:  0.00 - 0.20mm

I set 'em .000 - .002 on the closers, .004 on the intake openers, .005 on the exhaust openers.

just finished measureing mine, they all fall within the 'checking clearances'.  should i let them go until next service (15k miles), or should i bit the bullet and bring them into the tighter 'adjusting clearances'? 

Horiz. cylinder:

intake opener: 0.06mm (.0023)
intake closer:  0.13mm (.0051)

ex. opener:  0.10mm (.0039)
ex. closer:   0.03mm (.0012)

Vert. cylinder:

intake opener: 0.13mm (.0051)
intake closer:  0.12mm (.0047)

ex. opener:  0.10mm (.0039)
ex. closer:   0.10mm (.0039)

Looks like your openers are fine..

Anything over .002 inches on the closer, I would go ahead and fix..

BTW. you said 15k check is your next one..what does that make this one?? 10K???

7.5k (at 7000 now) per the new recommended intervals

It'll run a *lot* nicer at idle and low rpm if you get the closers down to .002.

That horizontal intake opener is too tight IMO, they're so easy to change that I wouldn't leave it that way.
You may be able to swap some of the opener shims around to improve things.

So are the clearances <.002 on all closers and .002 on all openers?  Should the exhaust openers be set at .003?  I'm afraid I'm getting more confused!

watch out for the mm vs inch differences. people are throwing out both for numbers right now.

I always set my closers as close to zero as I can for a couple of reasons
1. It holds its clearance longer if things are not thrashing around (try breaking an egg by tapping it with your almost touching the egg, then give you finger an inch before it makes contact).
2. half rings last a looong time (see #1)

with that in mind you never want to have drag, drag means you have less than 0 and rockers and cams can get damaged.

closers .000 - .0005" (inch)
openers as speeddog I use .004" on my intake opener and .005" on my exhaust openers

as close as you can get will be safe (no preloaded closers) but these bikes do like the settings I use . I was taught these a long time ago with lots of models and new specs since. these specs still are workiing great!

I had my valve guides replaced under warranty & I sprang for some fancy MBP collets & the 'brilliant" tech forgot to press on 1 oil seal & then set the openers @ .05mm & the closers @.60mm >:(  It was smoking & running rough when I picked it up.............. he said it was rich & I was seeing fuel, not burning oil................ I took his word for it & rode home.

Went to a different shop & found the bad oil seal & he replaced it & reset the clearences as follows:  all closers @ .05mm & all openers @ .15mm  this sound right ???  Bike runs much smoother & no more white smoke ;D

I'll bet it was running rough with the closers that loose.

What you've got now is a whole lot better, though it's likely redundant telling *you* that.  :)

As Ducvet posted, I also like my closers as close to 0 as possible.

In doing so, I like to do it with belts off. This is to get a better feel on how the valvetrain "feels"

For my closers after measuring, I like to have the opener rocker to the side and spin the cam belt pulley to see "feel" if there is any rubbing or restrictions. If so, then the measurement may have been to tight, if it's around .0015 and youre free spinn'n the pulley you know its good.

I set closers at .000"  and openers at .004" and .006"
When checking, I'll let +.001" go but hold -.000"

Zero clearance on the closers = they turn by hand but no measurable clearnce witj feeler guage.

The bike will run so much better and smoother its amazing.

Adjusted the valves this weekend.  All of the closers were loose and three of openers were off.  Purrs like a dream now.
