I guess because Moto2 bikes aren't 250cc bikes.
Seems like motocross went through this same name change when 4 strokes took over off road racing. No more 125, 250 and open. Just 2 classes now. 250cc 4 strokes taking over the 125/Lite class and 450cc 4 strokes taking over the open class. I miss 2 strokes.

I associate each engine type/size change with a different class no matter the name. 250cc 2 strokes will never be 600cc 4 strokes, the same as the 990 era won't be the 800 era, or the 1000 era, let alone the 500cc era.... 350cc... etc. The racing was defined by different technologies, riders, styles, and to lump decades of changes into one name does the history of racing injustice in my view. The name changes motogp/moto2/moto3 also mark the end of each respective 2 stroke era, so again I personally can't lump them together.

as i said in the other thread:

in actuality, "moto 2" (and "moto 3") are
less descriptive
names. they're "catch all" names that leave the organizers open to changing the underlying formula without being "boxed in" by a name that directly reflects something likely to be changed by the regulations, like engine displacement.
when the top tier class went from 500cc 2-strokes to 990cc 4-strokes, the class name changed from 500gp to motogp.
after this season, they will have gone through two additional displacement/formula changes and haven't had to rebrand/change the name.
it's just more flexible branding, that's all...

I'm an old fart so I still like the old class designations because of their descriptive nature. And yes, being an old fart means knowing who Kork Ballington is and that he won the 250cc and 350cc World Championships two years in a row.
Try that in this day and age! On Kwackers none the less!!
Fast Freddie will forever be the last double class champ from '85. Can you even imagine trying that now? Shit!
For all you kids out there:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kork_Ballington
To me the new names for the classes just come across like "big race bikes" "medium race bikes" and "smaller race bikes". Oh well... I like WSBK better anyway.

And just to add something completely irrelevant into the discussion, I'd have preferred the 4-stroke classes to be 250cc/500cc/1000cc.
Each twice as big as the last, as per the old 2-stroke formulas.

Hey, Rusty was a local boy.
A good friend who was a mechanic at Sammy White's Kawasaki in Irving, TX actually owned a '69 H-1 (street bike, not race) that was owned by Bradley. He bought it from the Bradley family after Rusty died at Daytona. You'd think they would have kept it. I've sat on it and his story is verified by Sammy White. Kid died WAY too young like someone else we all know of.
Bradley had crazy potential. Maybe even KR Sr. stuff! The world will never know. Sad.
Again, for all the kids out there:

One of his sponsors at one point in his career was Honda City/Boston Cycles. I worked there the spring he died.
