OK all next question in the process.
98 M600 hence no tacho.
Any suggestions(read cheap) re setting idle speed?
Sounds and feels OK but I have no idea what revs it is actually idling at

If the idle doesn't hang, and the motor doesn't stall it's good.

I purchased the harmonizer that was mention a few posts back when I need a sych tool for my R1100R that has no tach. It is much easier to use then the home made set up that I had and has an rpm gauge built in. I have no idea how this thing works but it does. Good Luck!

Ok thanks for the tips so far.
next attempted last night and seems to be almost too difficult and too easy at the same time.
Warm engine.
Synchroniser calibrated and hooked up.
Tweak balance screw so that vacuum reading is the same. Too easy.
Rev engine vacuum remains at same levels. Too easy.
Return to idle vacuum no longer identical. Not too easy.

Any suggestions please
although the best one would be just get on it and ride
thanks in advance

Now try adjusting the idle mixture screws to get the fastest/strongest idle on each cylinder. Look at the vacuum gauges/sticks to tell you that the idle is fastest and then match them both at idle and say 2500_3000rpm with the synch screw.

That is one way to do it.
If that dont give you a good result there is another similar way.
Try this first.
