Note,, I put about 10k in mileage a year

varies a lot based on whats being done. straight up at the dealer. the SF Will cost more, just because of the 4v valve job costs.

other then that, the SF has longer intervals between jobs. but not by much, 7500 vs 6000.

the carbed 900, can be serviced with no electronic tools, where the SF will require some electronic equipment.

if you do all the work yourself, then the SF isnt going to be that much more aside from taking it to the dealer to remove the MAINT sign, or doing some fine tuning to the ECU.

I would imagine the 900 would be way cheaper to maintain, esp. with the DIY aspect of older bikes.

if you're wanting the SF because it's new and shiny and you can afford it, why not get it?  waytogo

The SF uses the 4-valve motor so valve adjustments and belts will be more costly.

Note, the new SF is said to be getting the 11 degree motor from the MTS and Diavel - it has much longer service intervals so net service cost may actually not be any worse than your 2v M900 - perhaps even better (IIRC its interval is ~15k miles).  Something to keep an eye on.

yup, the sf848 is at 15k for service intervals.

i recently picked up a used '10 sfs.  i had already planned on getting a sf848 but the sfs1098 came up at a cheaper price than the sf848 and i couldnt justify not getting it.

if you're worried about the service intervals then the sf848 will probably even out like bikepilot said.  but also keep in mind that sf parts are harder to find than monster parts and mods tend to be a bit more expensive.

yeah... prices off the top of my head are:

1199 23-27k
sf/sfs1098 15-19k (10-15k used)
sf848 14k (15ish with tax)

and forgot to mention that average service cost for a 4v duc is around 1k.

Reality...is setting in & I really do love my M900!!!
Plus...my back and riding needs will not accept a SBK...although I do love the look!!!
A used Street Fighter would be the most logical up grade....but finances at this time don't support it.  Undecided
and probably not in the near future...between child support..plus my oldest is either going to Stanford, UCLA (out of state) or Cornell.
Well...at least I'm riding a DUCAT11 Vino!

That's an awesome choice of schools.  I think Princeton still has free tuition, or at least did when some of my friends went there I believe.  If the kid can get into Stanford Princeton is worth consideration, especially given the potential cost difference.  Yale and Harvard are expensive, but should have a pretty wide range of scholarship opportunities and they've got the whole hogwarts-style house thing going on which should be good fun.

FWIW for most things Stanford >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cornell imho.  Plus the bay area beats the pants off Ithaca.  cheeky

I was considering both for grad schools a few years ago and really liked Stanford, but Harvard had a stronger faculty in my specific area of interest so off to Cambridge I went.  Was a great experience, but the weather and riding in the bay area would have been 11ty billion times better.  Dolph

I was kidding, even though it has 15K service interval.
Why not consider an S4R?

This thread has been very enlightening for me ...also the (750-900 thread in Acc & Mod section)
I have come to realize its not more power I am after...I am very happy with the performance of my M900.
I  just like the look of the SF...mostly the tank.seat and tail section

So the S4R....looking just like my bike would not be a consideration....other than the sss!!!
