Maxima 10W40 Maxum4 Extra - Avoid!

Changed my 696 duc's oil a couple of hundred miles ago with this stuff (couldn't find any Shell Advance locally and didn't want to pay the overseas shipping cost).  Not sure if these guys sold me petroleum based oil and labeled it synthetic but this oil began to break down almost immediately. I can see the oil color began to change darker and darker every time. Kind of sucks that after only a couple of hundred miles under normal riding condition (no race track and extreme temperature) I may have to change oil and filter again.

It might be clutch material.

How many miles on this bike, and how long before the last oil change got dark?

2,600 miles today. I changed her oil at 2,400 just for fun. No problem with her clutch.

If the clutch isn't slipping I wouldn't worry.

It might just be the Maxima has more detergents than the previous oil.

The color isn't necessarily an indication the oil is no good.

Don't freak out over the oil going dirty almost immediately after you put it in. That's normal and you will find that any oil you get will do the same thing. The oil hasn't broken down. That's just the nature of the wet clutch brute. The bikes share oil between the engine, gearbox, & clutch.

It does that with diesel engines as well, goes black right after you put it in & freaks people out. Calm down- the oil's not worn out. As long as the additive package is not depleted(which is a matter of time & mileage, per the usual logic) you are fine.

Maxima 4 Extra SuperDuper whatever is very likely a premium quality product. If you watch the CA Cycleworks videos that's what Chris Kelley puts in his bikes. So it has to be good. I wouldn't lose any sleep over not being able to find any Shell Advance Ultra4 either. They should stop putting those stupid Shell stickers on the cases of US bikes. You will never find that oil because it isn't sold here. As long as it's a good quality motorcycle synthetic in the correct weight it's all the same anyway. If you want the absolute best use Redline or Klotz or anything that's fully ester-based. However you will be paying $15 a quart. Best to buy Mobil 1 for bikes and declare victory.

I only change it every 4 years to keep my prices low.

Did you change just the oil, or did you change the filter too? There will be some of the old oil leftover in the filter so that can contribute to faster than normal darkening of the oil. Then again, as already mentioned, it might be just this particular oil composition... the only way to know for sure is to send the oil for analysis.
