Gauges died while riding

I did search, and all I got was "moisture might have gotten in the gauges."  While this might be true, I would think the massive downpours I've ridden in during the last 32k miles might have gotten some moisture in there.

Today is slightly chilly on my ride in (39 and humid).  I ride all the time, so it's been significantly colder (usually in the low 20s during December-January-February) I get about 11 miles into my 12 mile commute, gas light comes on.  I make a left hand turn like I always do, the gauges and lights die and the immobilizer light blinks at me.  Bike keeps running.  Ride the rest of the way to work, park, and cycle the key.  Fuel pump goes, gauges pretend they are on a different bike that doesn't have the key in.  Push the starter button, and no  starter action.

I checked the engine ground and it seems tight.  I looked at the fuses, and they looked unbuggered.  I work in a lame office, not an auto shop, so that's all I've really got until I get it home.

Thoughts?

On suggestion from another list, I inspected the wires in the vicinity of the headstock/gauge cluster for evidence of brokenness/wear and saw nothing.

However, the plug that is supposed to be attached to the left side of the battery box was laying on the vertical head spark plug.  I assume this is some kind of diagnostic plug, and hopefully EMI from the spark plug wire didn't fry the gauges.

#2
Taillight fuse.  Why that makes sense, I don't know.

So, to recap for the archives:

While riding, if the taillight fuse blows you will lose all lights and the gauges.  The bike will keep running, so go to a gas station and buy a 15 amp fuse.  Replace it and  [Dolph] on.  If you don't replace it you will not be able to start the bike.

Glad you're rolling!

Might want to spend a bit of time looking for the reason that fuse blew.

I know why it blew... my no-chop fender eliminator solutions for holding the taillight have a reputation for not so much holding, and the taillight is banging around against metal again.

I have a plan, but I was taking the GS apart last night.  I'm just glad it was a $3 fix (that included a selection of automotive lamps that I don't need).

Glad we could help you out. Ride safely!

I can't wait until Marquez gets on his level and makes Jorge trip on his tampon string.
