Was fitting the other gas tank on my 06 S2R this evening.  After removing and reinstalling the fuel injector pump and connecting everything back up again, I fired her up and she sputtered like she wanted to start but wasn't getting enough fuel.  Blipped the throttle and she died.  Then I remembered that I forgot to connect the fuel pump wire.  Reconnected wire and she fired up, however, she's now making a sound like the engine is pinging....

There's a little bit of smoke coming out the the exhaust, feel like thats the engine burning up the extra fuel in the system but the sound has me worried.  Thanks for the help forum...

Sounds to me like a leaky something.

Injector?

Thanks for the tip Ducpainter.  Went out and checked the fuel pump nuts.  Everything is connect tightly.

Fired her up again while I was out there.  The engine sounds like it's knocking and not running at full capacity.  Could I have messed up the belt timing when I tried to start her without the fuel pump plug connected, which is causing the problem?

If you didn't mess with the belts I wouldn't suspect them.

Is it running on both cylinders?

You can check by putting your hand near each header. If it's hot it's firing.

I'll check on that in the morning.  During the last check when I blipped the throttle up to about 4K RPM, it felt like it was to cut off and the engine started stuttering.  If it is a cylinder misfire, how does one fix that?

The fuel pump makes the sound as if it's fully functioning when I turn the bike on and everything sweeps. Fuel pump also makes the same noise when I go to shut her down as she normally does.

99% of the time it was the last thing you screwed with.

I'd look closer at that injector you had out.

Would have to have to send it in to the shop  [bang]

Thanks for the help all in advance!

Check the o-ring seal for damage.

Hmmmm....

look in the tank with the bike running and see if you see any fuel spraying around.

Also check your plugs.

Checked the tank, no gas sloshing around in there from what I can see.  Also both plugs were pretty black so I replaced them.  Fired the bike up again and it's still making that pinging sound from the from of the bike.  Both cylinders were warm, burned my hand trying to get to the one by the exhaust pipe towards the rear of the bike.  Damn those things get hot fast.  Other suggestions??

Let's back up a little...after you answer howie's question.

Why did you take the tank off and have the pump out?

Did you replace the fuel filter?

I removed the tank so I could swap it with the one that was Caswell coated with the one that isn't so that one can have the same treatment done.  I've removed my tank before and never had this type of an issue....Not sure what the heck I did wrong.

Return line pinched?

I'm going to look into this right now.  Back in a few...

Return line clear and free, re-checked all the connectors no problem with those.

While scouring over the bike, I did notice that my battery tender cap was severed and it looks like it happened via one of the timing belt cogs.  Not sure how it happened, might have been when I was moving wires around to swap tanks.  They are covered by Speedymoto belt overs but it's not fully enclosed  :(

Understanding that the strap that holds the connector cap is small, could that have set things off like this?  If so, what do I need to get things back in sync and did I do damage while testing to find the problem by running the bike and blipping the throttle?
