Local S4, S4R, S4RS, any carbed monster (factory carbs)??

I am working on a project for a universal fit tanks for 2v models and 4v models. 

I need to check clearance on the S4xx models and on the carbed 2v models.

if you have one, I can come to you.  I will need to take the tank off, and put a different tank on to check the clearance and hose routings.

I will bring a 6-pack of something good.  If you don't drink, I'll bring you some flowers and chocolates.

If you can get the gas level very low, it should take about 2 hours.  If you remove your tank yourself, then less than an hour.

No harm shall come to your bike.  I just need to measure clearance against the tank I am using for the prototype.

I have a tank from a carb'ed bike sitting in my garage, you're welcome to keep it for a while if you need. The tank is house trained and will let you know when it needs to relieve itself..  [cheeky] [laugh]

Since you mentioned measurements, I thought you might be interested in the "indentation" (???) under the tank for the airbox/battery/crap... ;)

zooom is hinting at where I am going with this.  As you may know, the first gen Multistrada has tank expansion issues as well.  Like the Monsters, the Sport Classic tanks are relatively simply shaped.  Unfortunately, the Multistrada tank has a rather complicated shape.  Members on multistrada.net have queried a few aluminum fabricators that make motorcycle tanks and the general response seems to be that if they would even consider it, the pricing for a Multistrada tank would be excessive.  Nonetheless, I'll be interested to see what you learn through this endeavor.  If you make the tank big enough, who knows; maybe I'll swap my 1000DS motor into a Monster frame....

On another note, there is word that a few new gen (MTS1200) Multistrada tanks have been replaced for expansion.  This boggles the mind. How could Ducati/Acerbis/others possibly let this happen again? [bang]

I've already brought up the issue of other tanks and the only "problem" is the much smaller number.  Monsters make up almost half of all the bikes sold and I can probably make a single tank that will for for all 2v bikes between 1993 and 2008.  I can't do that with the SBK, Multi or SC tanks.

That being said, it is entirely possible that the price might be more palatable even in smaller quantities.  If you have a tank for me, let's talk.

What sort of threshold is needed to bring the costs down?  Are we talking dozens, hundreds or thousands?  The first gen Multistrada accounted for something like 17% of Ducati production during its run, so while certainly well below Monster #s, we are still talking about thousands sold per year.  The expansion problem seems largely limited to the US, but the scourge of ethanol is spreading and the problem will be cropping up across the pond as well.

I don't have a spare tank for examination, but I am quite certain one could be drummed up from multistrada.net.  I understand that you may want to take one thing at a time and figure out a Monster solution first, but if you are interested in Multi-tasking ([laugh]), I could certainly put out a call on multistrada.net for a tank.

This issue had a lot of momentum on multistrada.net a while back, but when Ducati started replacing tanks left and right, the interest waned.  Now that the class action suit has been settled and people can see the end of Ducati's goodwill to replace tanks, the interest is starting to perk back up. I would say that if you had an aluminum replacement tank available right now at a "palatable" price, you could probably sell a couple of dozen Multi tanks pretty quickly.  Beyond that, who knows.  Like I said, there are thousands of Multis out there, potentially with this problem.
