So ahh... on chains: I went to clean, lube, and adjust the chain on the SS. It was definitely stretched out and out of adjustment. Two of the O-rings are gone. Erica and I are not thinking it would be wise to ride it with those bearings on the chain in an unknown state.
So yeah, it's time for a new chain. The sprockets look fine tho... so how necessary is it to replace one or both of them?
Who do you guys typically go through to buy chain and sprocket(s)?

The DMF sponsors, links on the left hand side.
We've used CA Cycleworks.

+1, CA Cycleworks.
I usually replace the entire set all at once. Getting them all new at the same time gives the longest life. It's not so drastically expensive and it doesn't happen all that often. If you are strapped for cash, go with just the front sprocket and chain if the rear one looks ok.

you really shouldn't refer to your reproductive organs in such a manner
it frightens the children to see you standing naked and screaming at your cock

Well... inanely rambling on about maintenance. I called MotoCorsa and Cheshire to get quotes on replacing the chain and checking the valves. I'd love to do all this myself, but I'm way short on time. The valve check is gonna take a whole weekend considering all the disassembly and reassembly required, and that's provided I figure out how to support the butt end of the bike... the rear shock has to come out to get to the rearmost valve cover. The roof in the garage is sheetrocked, so I've got no open beams to hang the rear frame from. Any ideas? Again, not that I have the time...
I'm also thinking it might be nice to have receipts for these services. The SS is gonna be going down the road within the next year. Erica's dad is building a huge place out in rural Klickitat county, about 2 hours from Portland, and 45-55min from Hood River... and we're going to move in there, basically to long-term housesit, rent free (this'll be a huge help with paying down student loans). My father-in-law likes the idea of giving each of his kids a leg up in the world, so he asked Erica & I: if he built this place, would we live in it? Otherwise it'd sit empty most of the time. We said yes. Beautiful views of Mt. Adams, Rainier, and the Olympics. You can see Hood from elsewhere on the property. Some flavor of geothermal heating, with the warm water piped through the floors. It'll have 4kW of solar panels so the electric bills should be nearly nil. My only bills will be telecom/TV and whatever's left of the electric. The only catch is... 5 miles of gravel road. It's nicely graded, but it's still gravel. Multistrada or GS heaven... but definitely not the place for a Supersport. The place will be ready in early spring, and we'll be moving shortly thereafter, so the SS will need to find a new home before then. I'm hoping with the cosmetic condition of the bike that it won't be a difficult sale.
Since the '98 GTI is aging and it's not a country car, it'll be going on the chopping block, too. With the proceeds from the VW and the Duc, I'm hoping to have enough to buy a decent used Multi or BMW GS. There's a Cagiva Gran Canyon on CL for less than $5k, but I really don't like how the rear suspension is crammed in there. Yank the shock to adjust it, yank the shock to get to the valves, etc. The Multi looks like it has a lot more room to work, plus it has remotely adjustable preload.

The guy almost bowed down to me when I told him I knew the owners of the copyrights for it!

Yes, we discussed that
He won't be using it at least when he knows I'll know he is any more.
Not sure that's worth much but . . .
