Won't start

Pulled into parking lot in rush to not be late for a meeting, boss was pulling in at same time.  Got talking to him, and kicked down the stand, which, of course, cut the engine.  Then (doh!) forgot to turn the ignition off...left the keys in it and everything.

Of course I came back at end of day, and though everything was lit up all pretty, the bike wouldn't start.  I figured there wasn't enought juice to start it.  So I rolled it to our motor pool (am in the Army) and hooked it up to a Battery Tender Jr the next day.  After a couple of days the charger indicated GREEN, so I attempted to start it.  Everything light up real bright, but when I pressed the starter, it just clicked and everything turned off.  The menu, upon turning the ignition back on read
0002 5W
What is that code?

When I hit the internal menu it said
Hi BATT
Which I assume means that I overcharged the battery.  But that doesn't seem right.  The Battery Tender's can be run for months at a time. I let the lights rund for about an hour to see if the battery would drain a bit to around 15, but no go.
I called local dealer.  The service mechanic said that I might have imobilized the ignition.
Alas, I when I deployed to Afghanistan, I misplaced my Code Card.
What are my optons? What do you think is keeping the bike from starting?

Howie

If the immobilizer light didn't come and your instrument cluster went through it's light show the immobilizer is probably not the problem.  The battery cannot charge beyond maximum open cell voltage, overcharging the battery with an external charger will not hurt the bike if the battery is disconnected, but could hurt live key off circuits if the battery is not disconnected if the charging rate is too high due to a malfunctioning charger.  Doubtful, but possible.   Hi battery is high charging rate.  I have no idea how you could have set that code with the key off.

Start by load testing the battery so you know it is good.  An alternative would be jump starting from a known good battery.  Yes, you can use your car as long as it is not running.

Is your bike under warranty?

The immobilizer light didn't come on, the battery seems to work because I am getting a lot of output from dash, headlight, horn, turn signals all going at same time.

The Battery Tender Jr, for sure didn't overcharge the battery.  The light went green, signifying monitoring, not charging, and it was only on the bike for a couple of days, maybe 24 hours max.

Its the slight clunk when I press the starter button, and the headlight cluster blacks out.  Some signal or current is not getting from battery to starter.  I don't think its mechanical since the bike only has 3,900 miles and is a 2009.  The battery is brand-new since the last one died a slow death when I had it in storage while deployed to Afghanistan.

Its the weird code (00002 r5W) that I am concerned about.  But the local dealer (Fast by Ferraci) says that they don't recognize the code and without hooking it to analyzer then its a pot shoot.

But I am going to pull the battery then reconnect it; perhaps that will reset something, but also pull a battery from one of my other bikes.  Well, hopefully its not the computer system malfunctioning, or the starter or regulator.  Ugh.

It takes much more amperage to start the bike than to light the headlight and dash.  Your symptom is typical of a weak battery or bad connection.  That code is just a clue, your dealer is correct, more diagnosis is needed.  If I remember correctly, that code can be high or low charging rate.   Easiest way to get started with diagnosis is for the dealer to hook up the DDS (factory scan tool), but not so easy or cheap if you need to get the bike to the dealer.

While you are at the battery, get it over to a shop and have it load tested so you know it is good or substitute a known good battery.  If it starts, make sure it is charging properly   http://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/diagnosis-center/fault-finding-guide  since you got that code.

Though it is possible for a malfunctioning charger to hurt the computer it is not likely.

Doh!  Welcome back home and thank you for your service ;D

Thanks! Great advice and overall perspective on the problem.

Luckily I am the Maintenance/Transportation Officer for my unit, and one of my mechanics will load test the battery and perhaps pulling the battery giving it a battery tender charge OFF the bike will help, then reinstalling and hopefully the bike's computer will start fresh.  Otherwise, another mechanic has a truck and has offered to take me to FBF which is about 40 mins away.

Gotta love military camaraderie and fellowship!
