Crap. Odometer in Excess of Mechanical Limits check box
«

So I was trying to register my bike today and noticed that the seller accidently checked the box that says odometer in excess of mechanical limits. I'm trying to get in contact with him but if I am unable is there a way I can prove that the odometer is true? Stupid me for not paying more attention when I first bought it a few months back.

Check with DMV where you are..., which is where? Worst case, he'll need to apply for a lost title and assign that to you. Next time have him sign it blank!

This is for Maryland. They told me to get him to sign a vr-197 which is another of those without the box checked. What's the worst case if he doesn't respond?

Not familiar with MD. They told you this on the phone? You need to make eye contact with someone at DMV with a brain. They can walk you through this. With any bureaucracy, one hair out of place voids the whole deal. Get local guidance and make a friend and hang onto that person. Ask THEM what you do if the seller is MIA. I was a dealer in NJ and this situation would leave you SOL if the seller wouldn't comply. The easiest solution there was a new (lost) title filled out properly. If the seller couldn't be found, we'd have backed out of the deal. Just too much hassle. True, it's HIS fault for the screw-up, but now it's YOUR responsibility.

Thanks for the advice. I was there talking with someone at the DMV. Told me to come back if I couldn't get in touch with the seller or the seller wouldn't help. She didn't say though what would happen if I came back and the next steps which is why I am trying to figure out. Left the seller a voicemail and sent him an email but no response so far. Wouldn't I be able to prove that the bike doesn't have over 1 million miles thru the vin check and its service history as well as the owner's manual where it shows the max possible for the odometer?

Make that woman your friend. It will be as hard or easy as she wants to make it. Some "fudge" will be required and all on her end. Your bike goes higher than 99999? She might ask you to take it to the State Police for verification if she can't do it on the spot. She still has to overcome the botched title. And who's to say that your odometer is original. Does it get a signal from the ECU or is it mechanical? If the ECU stores the mileage, you might have an easier task. Good Luck!

When you start the bike up I notice that there are 6 digit places before it shows your actual mileage. It also shows 6 digit places in the owners manual which is why I assumed it can go up to 999,999. Does anyone know how far up the odometer goes?
