gearbox bug

The shift lever on my M750 isn't returning to center after a downshift, it gets stuck in the down position. Still cycles through the gears OK but when downshifting it gets stuck and I have to lift the lever enough to make it to the next gear down.  I think the spring is not the problem because it centers in neutral.  It feels rough like it's caught on something.

I wonder if this is something small which I could fix myself.  I can't take the whole gearbox apart but if it's a matter of a bent clip or something I want to do as much of the work myself. What sort of project do you suppose I'm getting myself into?

I'm just assuming (would have to witness what exactly it's doing), but it's probably nothing to do with the gearbox itself, sounds more like a clutch issue. Maybe the slave and/or master cylinder isn't retracting properly, causing the lever to not retract. maybe you have a lot of air in the line?

If I were you, I would check the pin that holds the lever to to the master cylinder + make sure nothing is catching, like you first said. Does it happen all the time or is it intermittent?

Not the clutch lever, the shifter lever.

Check to make sure the lever and pushrod aren't hanging up on something.

If they move freely, then it's likely something gone bad in the mechanism behind the left engine sidecover.

could be bent or miss-aligned external shift linkage. Or as speeddog said a broken return spring under the left side cover. If the bike has fallen on the left a bent shift shaft (part sticking through the cover)  would also do this.

Well I feel pretty stoopid now.  I read on another thread to check whether the bike had gone down on the left side ... and as a matter of fact I nearly dropped it while parking that day.  Guess I leaned it over enough to bend the shift lever which made it catch on the kickstand (there's a pointy nub on the stand where the spring attaches).

It all happened at night and then I posted my question from work.  I just hadn't had a good chance to inspect it yet.

I have the exact same problem as the OP but everything checks out externally.  It's intermittent and happens when  I shift down from any gear.  The shift lever just gets stuck "below" first.   ???

i had a similar expierience, mine wasnt from laying it down though, i hit a paintcan that fell out of a truck on the freeway, bent my shifter almost 90* inward. that wasnt a fun ride home.
