Rebuilding a Showa Shock

Does anyone have any tips on rebuilding the Showa shocks from a 999?

From the looks of it, i can just purge the gas, pop her open, give her a good cleaning and find a shop to refill it the proper PSI with nitro. Several shops say that for stock showas, the replacement seals dont seal too well.

I got some quotes and considering that the shock isnt worth much to me, i dont feel like spending $250 to get it serviced. I rather take that money and go for the lower end Penske unit (650 a traxxion dynamics).


The shock has about 20,000 miles and hasnt been serviced since it was born (2005 999). I'm pretty sure id see significant difference if i serviced it...

Only had experience rebuilding the Showa on 900 Superlight and Sachs on a 900 Monster with Ducatis. Rebuilding Showas on Honda race bikes also yielded good results.
Were you happy with the 999 Showa?

At the time, yes, but then i rode an ohlins equipped monster

I am happy with the 999 showa, but i think it can be better if I serviced it. but at $250 for the work. eh. not worth it.  especially since i already plan on getting a new bike next summer.

Fresh oil will help the shock...it does twice the work of forks.

If the shock wasn't leaking and it's just a freshen, while shock oil isn't cheap, I don't think he gets $250.

I had the same experience. Now I want a Penske.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that traxxion dynamics will not sell you the lower end penske for an S2R1K if they wouldn't sell me one for the 800.  Apparently the emulsion ones don't work right on the S*R swingarm unless they have a remote reservoir.

I've done the shock on my S4R, it's not too bad to do. I've done other Showa Gixxer shocks before too. I have a .pdf of installation instructions for a shock Gold valve, it can help you through the process if you want to tackle it. PM if you want the instructions.
