So my S4 has been runnig shitty since I've moved to Cali from IL. She runs and warms up good andf no problems at WOT but when I come to a stop the idle drops and she shuts off. After troubleshooting valves, new iridium plugs, possible petro tank vent clog (newly painted tank), open airbox (without changing ECU-and I put the old piece back one) I was brain dead. She was running lean with the airbox off and the gas mileage was great (plugs were nice and frosty looking too). I then replaced the open with the stock airbox lid and disconnected the battery for 30 mins to "reset" the ECU. ran the bike for 80 miles then checked the plugs again. No oil (thought about valve guides going awry) and the color was that of a normal running plug, also the gas mileage resumed  Undecided )

So after reasoning, I got to talking to the dealer. Initially he thought the problem might be with the open airbox. I was with him and kept that in the back of my mind. After brainstorming, I was thinking that maybe the Marelli 5.9 (although can automatically adjust settings), is having a problem adapting to the 3000ft drop of sea level difference between Illinois and California. Would the air pressure have that much effect? Since I've checked my own valves last 18k interval the TPS hasn't been reset, the Co2 hadn't been analyzed. Guys, what do you think?

I've since gave in and scheduled an appointment with the dealer for a Mathesis diagnosis since I've hit a brick wall. I love to troubleshoot but the CPU is outta my hands. Although I though about picking up that software from CA-Cycleworks, from what I read I cannot adjust anything. Anyhow, ideas, comments?

One who has tried...

ECU can adjust for air temp and pressure, and does it very well in my FHE on my S4.

Perhaps a TB sync is in order, and/or some general TB/TPS lovin'.

general efi set up may help you, +1

The fuel in cali may have more additives for smog control than the bike used to see and a more local shop will be able to set CO and get things running right.
good luck

Good call Ducvet. I never would have thought of that, but it makes perfect sense.
