Forks and triple tree M900 1999

Hi guys as I said in my introduction I would be asking some questions.
Here goes with the first one;

When I collected the bike the forks were around 1 1/2 inches through the top clamp, the fork adjusters were almost touching the bars, this looked a lot to me so I downloaded a manual for the bike and they seem to be spot on. Now, I look at all your pictures and they are flush with the top clamp.

If I drop them through that much surely the steering will go to hell?

I have a set of 1 inch raisers for the back hoop, to fit when I get home. The forks are Showa  and the rear shock is a sacks.

Id use the manual's specs. However all that will change when you raise the rear. You will have to see how it feels, but an inch on the hoop (25mm), is alot. You may raise the front if the front feels unstable. You can drop the forks thru 5mm at a time and see what works for you.
There would be threads on this to search.

Thanks, I'll have a look through the search results. I would think an inch raise at the rear and an inch at the front should make little difference and bring the forks down the triple tree.

Are those stock forks or are they longer than stock, like off a Super Sport?  A shop manual will give you a measurement from the top of the fork (not including cap) to the bottom of the lower triple and a measurement from the center of the bolt that attaches the hoop to the rocker to the center of the bolt that attaches the hoop to the swing arm.  If the forks on your bike are not stock length this will not work for the front.

I wont be able to do any measuring as I work abroard. The forks are showa adjustable but I have no idea if they are original as I only got the bike a few weeks ago. I did measure the bottom clamp to the fork top and it was as the manual said 380mm I think it was.
I didn't measure the back although it does feel low when sat on.

+1.  Supersport forks are longer than Monster forks, but have the same diameters at upper and lower triple. That'll really screw up measurements if you don't know.  That said, its a good idea to measure from the bottom of the outer-tube (by the seal) up to the bottom of the lower triple, that way it doesn't matter which forks you are bolting on!  (I've got SBK forks on all of my monsters, and SBK forks, like SS forks, are longer than Monster forks)

I have the stock Showa adj. forks & 30mm raisers in the rear & clip ons.
My forks are flush to the top triple....steering is very quick...took a little getting used to.
I also have a Ducati Performance steering dampner that I use on freeway rides.

how do you "use" it on the freeway - you mean its not installed other times, or you simply hit an off switch?

It has a valve which you turn to give more or less resistance.
You need to be aware when you it have cranked on while doing slow riding...parking lots or neighborhood riding.
I have gotten off the freeway to stop go traffic sharp slow speed turns and almost gone done!!!
