How much freeplay would you accept on full floaters?

My Brembo full floaters have done a great job for some 20k miles.

Sintered pads. No visible rotor wear, but about a mm of directional (?)(not sideways) freeplay.

I now have the rattle I was told to expect with full floaters, but the brakes work fine.

Question is: when would you get new?


(Brake Tech looks nice. Brembo T-drive might solve this issue, but I like the gold carrier)

I've got 41k miles on my set of Braketech iron rotors.

They swapped out my carriers (for free) 9k miles in, as they were the early style with the little 'shoe' that they were no longer comfortable with.
So 32k on this set of carriers.

I've got ~1mm freeplay total, side to side, and about 0.75mm total rotationally.

They're 4.83mm thick now, started at 5.08mm, min spec is 4.5mm.

I don't expect I'll have to replace them anytime soon.

Yes.

It seems to me that it's the aluminum carriers which are the weak links here.
Both Brake Tech and Brembo T-drive have other ways to distribute load and will likely not be as subjected to button/carrier wear. (,but are not gold - damn it)

I've got an Alth floating rear caliper that achieved an appalling amount of wear in 20k miles.
~3mm of rotational play, and at least 2mm side-to-side.
Virtually all of the wear is in the carrier.

Let me check with BrakeTech, see what it would take to get a set with gold carriers.

I have Alth rotors on the front.  One has no rotational play, the other, well let's just call it a whole bunch.

I just did - they have their steel with a gold carrier. (red/pink buttons and a cheesy gold, but still...)

In theory the buttons are trying to escape the carrier and freeplay will help them do that. I'm sure it takes more than a mm, but I'm not eager to be the one who finds out how much more it takes...

I emailed Brembo and got an answer - during the weekend - not bad

They say there are no directional freeplay numbers to go from.
As long as the lever action feels normal they're good.

It will be a close match between another set of regular Brembo HP full floaters, BrakeTech iron and Brembo T-drive.

Did it rattle at all speeds or just before coming to a stop?
