I own a 1997 M900, carbd.

When I start my bike cold, it idles around 1400 RPM.

After a ride, it will idle at 2400 RPM.

I've been having intermittent issues of the motorcycle dieing on me since I got it back from the shop. It acts as though it has run out of gas.

I'm going to take off the fuel filter tommorow (replaced less than six weeks ago) and blow it out with an air compressor.

Why would my bike idle higher after it's warmed up well? Is there a way to adjust the idle?

My bike has never died on me until I took it in for service, and began idling higher after the service.

The bike idle climbs because you are hitting the RPM that causes the ignition advance to kick in.  You could lower the idle, but chances are good the bike will be more likely to stall.

The answer is easy.  The bike ran well, you brought the bike to the shop.  Get it back to the shop.

Don't blow through the filter with compressed air.  You can destroy the paper.

The nearest duc shop is an 9 hour round trip :(. Le sigh  [bang]

OK. that makes things difficult.  What service did the shop perform on your bike?  This can give us a hint as to what went wrong.  You  may also want to post up on your local board.  Gotta be someone closer than 9 hours.

Where are you located?

Chances are you don't need a dealer to fix this.

It probably can be fixed with a sync.

Looking through my service record from the dealership:

I had:

"Full Service" aka Valves adjusted, Belts changed, Fluids changed, new gaskets.

Fork seals replaced, new fork oil.

Stearing head bearings

Rear Caliper Replaced

New rear tire ( Nail  [bang])

Electrical work on tach (tach needle was 'sticky'. Would idle at 0 RPM, very slow, would not go above 4k).

Recommendations:

Battery box is corroded from battery acid.
Clutch slave body is loose. recommend replacing.
Ground cable from battery to frame has been overheated. Keep an eye on it. Recommend replacing.
clutch hub needs to be replaced.
Needs new chain and sprockets.
Recommend jet kit for carbs.
Diag Tach = Tach needle is 'sticking' can be sent off to be repaired.

Since the service, I have installed:
New battery
New Slave
New NGR billet clutch hub
New DID chain + sprockets
New! DP  Tachometer

Now that I can see the RPM's at idle. When I crank it cold, i idle around 1400 RPM. When I get back to my house from a ride (choke closed) I'm idling at 2400 RPM.

The bike shut down on me twice yesterday during a 30 mile ride. I hear some popping from my exhaust prior to the motor cutting off.

It would not start on the first few tries (motor turns over). I picked up the tank, jiggled the fuel filter and checked the fuel line to ensure no kinks were in the line. Bike fired up after I held the throttle open some.

Spark plug wires are seated firmly on the plugs.

For the stalling I suggest inspecting your tank vent line to make sure they are not kinked.  I forgot, does your '97 have a carbon canister?  If so, you might want to eliminate it.  Also, when the bike stalls open the fuel cap.  If there is vacuum you have a venting problem.

Lower the idle to around 1100 RPM and see if this helps with the hot high idle.  Oh, before anything else, check for vacuum leaks.  Sync throttles if needed.  http://www.ducatisuite.com/carbsynch.html  will show you the basics.  This site also has a tutorial on removing the canister.  Mercury sticks or something like a TwinMax work a lot better than a vacuum gauge.

Ventlines were kinked. Good call.

Idle still high when warmed up however. I'll attempt to adjust.
