Replacing rings?
«
on:

I just bought an '01 750 dark and I've noticed that my top cylinder is leaking oil where it meets the crankcase. I was wondering if there was any reason to change the rings since I'd be in there. It only has 11,000 miles on it, but I would hate to find out later that it was needed and would have to break it down again.
Also, would there be any need to go ahead and replace the front gasket also?

Do a compression or leak down test. Passes? Rings are good. Actually, if the bike runs well you should be good. I assume, by back cylinder you mean vertical and front you mean horizontal. Vertical base gasket leaks were common on that bike, horizontal, not so. I would leave it alone. Use Tri Bond sealer or equivalent on the base gasket. Also make sure the leak is not from the breather valve.

Sounds great, thanks man.
I actually thought it was from the breather to begin with because it has the k&n set up on it, but I caught the leak red handed yesterday when I got to work. Doesn't seem like too bad of a fix though, so I'm still happy with my purchase & price.
