I have a 2003 620

Our house burned down, and the red key with the metal code was salvaged, but the black key I used all the time was either burned or scooped up in the muck out.
We have a detached garage, so my bike and everything in the garage was saved.

My local Ducati dealer tells me that even though I have the red key (and the metal code thing) that I need a "program card" to make copies of the red key in order to get more keys made.

Is this correct? What are my other options. I am in austin Tx

Sorry to hear about your house.

For keys, contact SOS Diagnostics. They have a good reputation and can do pretty much everything including replacement code cards:  http://sosdiagnostics.com/Ducati.html

if the red key is functional then you need two new black keys, as there has to be at least 3 coded.  but nothing apart from the red key is needed to start the coding procedure.

the red key is functional, it is what I am riding the bike with right now... but I want to make copies as it is my only copy.

And I thought what you are saying (Brad Black) was the case, but my dealer says they still need the code card.
I thought older monsters didn't even have a code card (my bike is an 2003). When I bought my bike, I honestly don't know if it came with a code card or not.
Is the dealer miss understanding, or telling me the truth? anyone?

I am kinda scared to ship off the only key I have in the mail. argh.

thanks for your condolences D3vi@nt. We have rebuilt on the old slab, and the new house is even better than the old house!

All Monsters '02 and later (non-696/796/1100) have the code card and immobilizer.
I haven't the faintest idea why the dealer is saying they need the code card, other than possibly some legal crapola.

You don't need to ship your red key anywhere.

Purchase two (blank/uncut) black keys, either from a dealer or SOS or whomever.

Take your red key and the two black keys to a local key-cutter.
I'd recommend a genuine locksmith, as the folks at the big-box hardware stores don't seem to understand the equipment all that well...
Get the keys cut to match the red one, then test to make sure they physically work the locks.
Then 'code' the two black keys.

Thanks!
I am not doing too good at searching... can you provide a link to steps on how to code the keys after I get them cut.

John1454

nevermind, I think I found it.

1. there should be at least two BLACK KEYS and a RED one.
2. you put your RED key to ignition, TURN ON and OFF very quickly
3. you have to make a second TURN ON and OFF with red key (while turned on you will see that the screen will begin to count from 25 to 0).
4.When you see it counting down, immidiately take out the RED key and put the first BLACK key.
5. in a very quick way, TURN ON and OFF the with the balck key. (do not wait the gauges sweep- just turn on and off very quick,) on the screen you will see it shows "2" wich means second key.
6. take off the first black key and then put the second black key. TURN ON and OFF again very quickly(as you did one step ago). screen should display "3" and every time you insert a new black key it should count down from 25 to 0 again.
7. finaly you take out the second black key and put the RED KEY again. TURN ON and OFF very quickly again. then take out the red key . It should all be done.
keep in mind that when you TURN ON and and TURN OFF any of the keys you should not wait until gauges sweep out.
8. put your new black keys to ignition and turn ÅŸt to ON position. you will see engine led will turn off .
enjoy your new black keys.

If what I posted above works, I don't understand why the dealer said they couldn't do it and that I would have to ship off the red key. hmm.

I'll get two black keys cut tomorrow and try to program them myself, hopefully I am successful.

take risks

I bought my bike with only one black key. I cross my fingers every damn day.

Good luck. Hope it works.

I hope one of the solutions above work out for you.

In the meantime, I'm assuming you have home owners insurance, right?  If so, in the event that you need some expensive replacment part from Ducati, insurance should help you out.

Best of luck, and sorry for your home.  :(

muskrat

sorry to hear about your home.

as for the dealer saying that........well, find another dealer is my opinion.  legal crap or not they didn't seem to answer your question.

I always thought the code card was in case you lost the "RED" key?!? I believe it is just a backup if you lose your red key you can use that at the dealer to get a replacement.

ducatiz

my code card for my 05 s2r has a code and instructions for unlocking the bike if the immobilizer freezes...

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

brad black

the code card is for overriding the immo with the mathesis or dds or using the throttle technique.

there is no provision for being able to get replacement keys for the bike.
