Just wondering what this part is? and can I move it out of this awkward spot on the outside of the frame? I pulled the carbon side pieces off of my old m750 and I def dont remember this part being here... maybe its an emissions part as my last bike was in texas and this one nyc?

(sorry for the crappy phone pic)

That's the mount spot the M900 uses as on the 900 the ECU occupies the space that the coils do on the 750.

I do not kid. That's where it is, behind one of the side pods. The other hovers just outside the frame up by the airbox.

This is a 750 yeah, so it's Carb'd... so you should be able to put it back in it's original position which is between the air box and battery.

Diagrams!

Ah ha... yes now that I look more closely - it's a 2000 900S - I see the Ohlins reservoir there.

Well, you can free up some space by doing away with the oil vapor catch box - the black above the coil in your photo and running a hose right from the breather to the air box. As you might expect that box is there to catch condense oil vapor. Bypassing it means you might get some oil in the air box, and some in the combustion mix. Or you could swap to a filter connected to the breather and disconnect it from the air box - though there's a lot of debate on this point that you can look up.

But those are a couple ways to make space right there the would allow you to move that coil.

Mine's been hanging out there for over 4 years. Why move it? Except maybe to not have stuff hanging on the frame.

I don't think you NEED to move it if you have the side covers on...

Well its definitely a purely cosmetic issue for me, I prefer to have the side covers off like the look of seeing all the frame and with this part staying here it kinda defeats the purpose so in my eyes it is a NEED to move it, I wont be happy till it happens haha. It would be a shame doing all this work cleaning up the bike and rerouting all the wires to keep this piece in its current location.

I wouldnt guess its position has anything to do with keeping it cool as its been mentioned the ones on the other models are under the tank

Like said...between the battery and the airbox (right under the tank).

I have the side covers from the M750 if interested we can work out something.  I do see the mounted tabs for the covers.

apparently on our 900's the ecu takes up the spot between the battery and airbox that these usually would go according to slide panda. ps on the covers that came on my bike they had a big bulge in them that was different from the covers that were on my 750 when i had it so maybe someone else can chime in here but it wouldnt surprise me if the covers from a 750 would not fit over this on a 900
