Does your S2R1000 only start in neutral?

I don't know if you have one now, but it came out of the factory with one.  Sometimes they disappear when aftermarket levers are installed.

SHould have the 'Clutch safety interlock' allowing you to start with the lever pulled in. As noted some aftermarket levers don't have a nub or tab to actuate the switch.. or your switch is broken. You can jump the interlock and fool it into thinking the lever is pulled all the time. Just disconnect the switch and jump it with wire to test.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Not to sound like an Idiot, but mine dies when I put the sidestand down and it's in gear...even if the clutch is pulled.  So it won't start if the sidestand is down.... :-\

Sounds like the same issue. YOu should be able to start with the stand down, if the lever is pulled.

My bike will shut off if I shift into gear with the stand down. But I feel like my old monster would start in gear with the stand up, clutch in. The S2R won't, I'll have to check the switch.

S2R will NOT start with kickstand down if the bike is in gear, whether the clutch is pulled in or not.

Starting breakdown (to the best of my knowledge from experience with burning out my starting circuit on the ecu of my S2R800)

Neutral + Kickstand Down + Clutch In = Start  [thumbsup]
Neutral + Kickstand Down + Clutch Out = Start  [thumbsup]
Neutral + Kickstand Up + Clutch In = Start  [thumbsup]
Neutral + Kickstand Up + Clutch Out = Start  [thumbsup]
In Gear + Kickstand Down + Clutch In = NO Start  [bang]
In Gear + Kickstand Down + Clutch Out = NO Start  [bang]
In Gear + Kickstand Up + Clutch In = Start  [thumbsup]
In Gear + Kickstand Up + Clutch Out = NO Start  [bang]

*Don't forget about your kill switch, and of course the ignition  ;)

All of these functions are controlled by the ECU starting circuit.
If the ECU is bypassed (by wiring the starter button directly to the starter relay/solenoid), then the bike will TRY and start in ANY of these circumstances, even with the killswitch engaged. However, because the sensors that are in place are throwing up red flags on the IGNITION/SPARK circuit of the ECU, the bike will not fire a spark. So essentially, the bike will try to start, but just CRANK and CRANK and CRANK in accordance with the breakdown above... unless it's in gear... then it'll buck a little too. ;D

i know ;D
just adding a little chart for informational purposes.
also added a bit about the ECU properties.

I assumed in gear, side stand up.  Cory is correct.

Not sure if this is clear to you but there are electrical switches on your clutch lever & the kickstand. The kickstand switch is there for safety reasons. The way I understand it, if the bike is put in gear with the kickstand down the ECU shuts the bike off. You don't want to go cruising with the kickstand down and punch a hole in the case or break off the kickstand  :'(. And I think the one on the clutch is there for warm up (not totally sure) or as a way for the ECU to know when the bike is in neutral. My S2R was circumcised of its kickstand switch when I got it as well as the o2 sensor  :-\.

The clutch switch is there so you can start the bike quickly if it should stall while you are in gear with the side stand up, i.e., stall in traffic or at a light.  It overrides the need for a neutral light input as long as the side stand is up.  Worst case scenario for taking  off with the side stand down is a high side.

Update.

First off thanks for the breakdown. This is the option not working for me, In Gear + Kickstand Up + Clutch In = Start

BUT I pushed the little micro switch with my finger and it will start in gear with the stand up. Now my question is how do I adjust that copper thing on the lever or the switch.

If no one has a quick answer, I'm going to check the manual at lunch. I also noticed that when the PO put the levers on after powder coating they lost the nut under the clutch lever now I need to find a replacement.

Thanks again for the help!

corey

sounds like the lever is just not adjusted correctly to engage the switch. that'll happen i guess.

also, yes... these are all safety measures enacted to better protect us from our own forgetfulness and stupidity.
i wish my starting circuit was still functionally, but luckily the sensors all run separately.
my only REAL danger is burning up the starter if i sit there and try and crank the bike over in an improper starting method (see above chart).

the kickstand switch is basically another kill switch, completely shutting off bike, if the neutral switch is not engaged.

if the nut isn't there, the clutch switch may not engage all the time, since it is now free floating.

with that nut on, you can make sure the switch's bracket is as close to the lever's nub as possible.

*macguyver solution- nick the one off of your brake side and put it on the clutch side until you can get a new one
