most suck. read all the fine print.

lots of shops will not work with the providers.

the service advisors hate them.... the mechanics hate them.

they nit pick what they will cover.

many years in the service industry listening to customers complain about be'n screwed

new dealer with used dept -- it's a one-owner trade-in.  extended warranty would be from warrantydirect, they have a fairly good rep from what i've seen.

http://www.warrantydirect.com/major_care.asp

here is the actual contract:

http://www.warrantydirect.com/major_care_contract.asp

They don't deal with your mechanic, they only require you to go to a "Licensed Repair Facility" which I need to find out what that means (or who).  I prefer having a dealer to work on my car usually and this is not an old car -- 06.

if you are going to be taking the car back to the dealer for and repairs.... go into the shop, and ask the service advisors and lead mechanics, and the back parts counter (the parts counter the mechanics use, not the customers) and ask them what they think. Most will be honest and tell you if they suck or not.

If you are planning on taking it to your own mechanic, ask him/her what they think. and in that see if the plan will allow you to take it to him/her.

Most of the plans look good on paper, but..... they (the plan) will make you and the mechanic jump through a ton of hoops just to get the simplist of things done. They look for outs, more than they do to help you.

Also... if the brand being sold, is being sold at the same dealership (used nissan at a nissan dealership), ask if the mfg has an extended contract available. Most do. Those are usually an extension of the standard 3 yrs 36 thousand mile stuff, and are waaaaaay better. The happy funtime smiles and good stories about extended contracts stop as soon as they have your money. (and..... do not finance a contract...EVER)

if the term "bumper to bumper" was mentioned..... run away.

and.... look for the word (internal). I've seen claims denied on full engine failure, because it was an external part fail, that caused the internal parts to fail.

sensors that screw into a block.... are not internal.

Ive written service for
Cadillac, Kia, Nissan, Isuzu, BMW, Pontiac, GMC, Suzuki, and have never seen a customer who was happy after having purchased a contract outside of the mfg's extension. That not to say, items are never covered, it's just that the contracts are like go'n to a casino, the odds are in the houses favor.

Spent 10 years in the car biz, and I agree completely.

If you get an extended warranty... make sure it is one sold by the vehicle manufacturer.

Is this used car a brand that the dealer sells new?

If so, you can get one from them, make sure they sell you a manufacturers extended warranty.. not some off brand.

Thanks fellas

Warranty is separate, dealer doesn't sell this car, but has had it serviced and such and is giving a 30 day/1000 mile included with the purchase.

It's a recent model and I think there may be some initial warranty left, I have to check with the mfgr.

I appreciate the heads-up on the buzzwords (i.e. internal).  This contract looks decent to me, but I don't do this kind of contract in my line of shystering.

I will probably give it a pass.  I've worked on plenty of cars and I can usually spot a dud.  I've never bought a car new and never have had a problem beyond normal used car wear and tear.

Re: Mfg extended warranty

My 2004 Jetta TDI just came out of warranty and they tried to sell me the mfg extended warranty. It was 2500$ and once you read the fine print, you are paying deductibles on EVERYTHING, with a lot of shit not covered. I found it to be bullshit.

If your vehicle is out of warranty, the price will sometimes double.   Did they offer you a zero deductible plan?

I just checked out a ESP using my pop's 2006 F150 4x4 (four wheel drive is usually the most expensive)

This is with a zero deductible, going to 100,000miles and good thru 2012.  And it's the best they have.

1 major repar these days and it's paid for.
