i typed a reply a couple of days ago, then the laptop went flat and lost it.

the long rod lets the piston dwell longer around tdc and move away again slower, so you get the gas pressure held for more of the crank rotation.  traditionally works well on higher rpm motors.  in circle track and drag racing short tracks and drag motors (trend is going back to i believe) tend to use short rods, long track and top speed motors long rods as a generalisation.

plus the piston can be shorter and therefore lighter with a longer rod.

Not by much I'd reckon...

I've seen one S4Rs into 888 build that was just amazing...  Can't remember where though.  Huh?
