Bad fuel pump survey
«
on:
October 20, 2012, 03:34:57 AM »
hello all
Just for shits and giggles I'd like to compile some data on the many fuel pump issues that i and others have had.
What i would like is for people to pm me with 3 pieces of info 1)make and year 2)type of fuel used[% ethanol] 3)resolution
I will take this info and put it in one neat post.
I'll start
2008 s2r1000 , PetroCanada 94 10% , re-soldered joint and replaced bad epoxy

OK I will add my data
1991 750ss carby never had a fuel pump issue in 5 years running on regular 95RON petrol even with rusty tank inside now coated with Petseal.
2000 Monstercarby never had a fuel pump issue in 8 years running on regular 95 RON petrol.
2001 Monster S4 EFI never had a fuel pump issue in 6 years of running on 10% gasohol 95 RON
but once a month filled with regular 95RON petrol and always stored with regular petrol for long periods ...NEVER Gasohol.

I got me a
2001 Monster 900Si.e. I always ran 93-95. No fuel pump problem, but I definitely clean the lines every time I take dents out of my tank, at leasst once a year.

A lot of people with the plastic-tank'd monsters are going to be having problems in the near future. IMHO, there's something wrong with how the wiring harness is laid out and wire strain is the cause of the problem. Or "they" (Bitron) cheaped out with their epoxy. Even if they did the epoxy wrong, that would lead to leaking, not wires breaking...

My 1991 900ss' fuel pump crapped out after 3 years and 28K miles.
Probably not a data point you care about

I'm convinced the epoxy used is not chemically compatible with ethanol. Also tin/lead solder is definitely NOT compatible with ethanol. Therefore when ethanol leaches through the epoxy and reaches the solder joint(tin/lead) it eats at the joint.
So here we have enigine vibrations shaking wires that are being held by a corroded solder joints and epoxy that has being transformed into a sponge. Eventually the wire connection fails.
If it takes years for the ethanol to reach the solder joint (half way between the inside and outside of tank) then it would take the same amount of time before reaching the outside and leaking.I'm sure it wasn't their intention to cheap out on the epoxy but rather the epoxy wasn't designed to withstand the addition of ethanol to the petrol.
Materials NONCOMPATIBLE with fuel ethanol
Metallic: Zinc, brass, lead, and aluminium Ternary (lead-tin-alloy)-plated and steel lead-based solder.
Nonmetallic materials: Natural rubber, polyurethane, cork gasket material, leather, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamides, methyl-methacrylate plastics, and certain thermo and thermoset plastics.

1992 Superlight.
Known the bike since 2000. Still on the same pump. I know three out of the four owners and they avoided Ethanol blends.
My '95 M900 is on the original pump which I have disassembled and cleaned once.
I avoid the 10% Ethanol blend being introduced down here.
