2 into 1 exhaust question
«

On my '99 I have low mount headers. Couldn't I conceivably cut off one of the little sections of pipe where the slip on connects, (at the base 'Y' connection point) and weld the hole closed, and run a single slip on exhaust? I realize that this may not be optimal in terms of exhaust flow as compared to a proper pipe set up but I think it would work as a low budget solution.

doing that would severely reduce higher rpm power, mostly due to the design of the "X" crossover. you'd need to remove the entire crossover and design something completely different for it to be somewhat efficient even as a comparison of performing equally to the current setup

there is a thread, here or on ms i think, about someone cutting the stamped piece out except for the outer section on one side and welding in matching half sections of pipe on the inside of the y. lots of pages it went for, can't remember where or by who now. it eventually got dyno tested and seemed to work surprisingly well.
just blocking one side will result in only about 1/2 the cross sectional area of the headers remaining on the other side. it should hurt it a lot.

IF you can find one, the <1993 600SS had 2 into 1 headers with Single Exhaust.

which is one (or two) sizes smaller than the 900 headers and hurts power on a 600 ime. it was the 400 header set.

I was using it more as an example of how ducati has done it for visualization.

gotcha. Cheap solutions usually merit cheap results. Just something I'm considering for the spring
So to counteract the exhaust restriction I would really have to weld on bigger header ends...do math...etc...etc. Or dial down the jets to handle the restricted exhaust. Which might balance things out but not necessarily make better performance/power.

it ended up as a epic fail. definitely would have needed to rejet the carbs. it choked the bike out bad wouldn't even run enough to ride.

Restrictive even for the 600 with the small valve heads and ugly.
The mod on Ducati.Ms is pretty interesting. Im not sure it is a good idea on a 900 though. Maybe a 750 will be OK but its a lot of gas to push without going up in pipe diameter.

My M 750 F.I. has that same 2 into 1 pipe but i have a short yosh can . it sounds very good and pulls great down low and in the mid range , i get a few super light pops but nothing bad or to worry about because its not all the time and its like its running out of gas pop . the bike came that way when i got it and has nylon hoddie material, steel zipped over the horn runners . im sure a lost some top end but im 1 down and 1 down in the rear and she rides fine at 85-88 over the road . pulls off the line like mad too.
